Fiji win the London Sevens as New Zealand take overall series title

london-sevens-highlgihts-fi.jpg

Fiji took the London Sevens title in convincing style as they beat rivals Samoa 38-15 in the Cup final on Sunday, but it was New Zealand who captured the overall series title, their 10th in 13th years. Below are highlights from both day’s play at Twickenham.

New Zealand’s 36-0 demolition of South Africa in the quarter-finals was enough to clinch them the overall title, so when they lost 37-7 to Fiji in the semi-finals, it didn’t bother them too much. They ended top of the table and as you can see below, finishing just marginally ahead of Fiji.

“It’s pretty special, we worked extremely hard to get this one and I think everyone knows how competitive the Sevens Series is now. We came here with an 11-point lead but still with an opportunity of blowing it,” said New Zealand’s inspirational captain, DJ Forbes

“The quarter-final win was probably our only complete game of rugby this weekend, but there was a lot of passion, a lot behind it to make sure we wrapped up the series. At the end of the day it comes down to consistency and that’s where we were probably a little bit ahead, but taking nothing away from Fiji, they’ve done extremely well to win here,” he added.

Fiji captain Setefano Cakau said his team were delighted with the result, and had excelled all season, achieving the goals they set out. “We came from fifth last season to second which is a big improvement for us,” he said.

Australia beat England 14-12 in the Plate final, Wales won the Bowl final, and France beat the USA to win the Shield final. Below are official highlights from Saturday and Sunday, including the final.

Super Rugby 2012 Profiles – The New Zealand teams

53ea957258a30e32e25705a3638cafa4.jpg

Super Rugby is just a week away so our man in New Zealand, Tony O’Sullivan, has put together a no-nonsense preview of the teams over there that will be competing for the trophy. Next week we’ll feature the Australian and South African teams. Feel free to share your thoughts on the sides, the previews, and what excites you most this year.

bc68e4a3d74ceaf1e8c07bf915df7a28.jpg

The Crusaders. Like Harry Redknapp hates investigations into his offshore accounts, I hate the Crusaders. Well I did, but now after all the good people of Canterbury have been through I find my self saying in hush tones that taste like vinegar ‘C’mon crusaders.’ The team has some of the biggest names in the game and talent throughout the squad.

The buzz word when describing the Crusaders is culture. ‘It’s their culture that makes them so successful’, ‘It’s their culture that separates them’. Well whatever it is, the Super Rugby runners up of 2011 – in the most trying conditions imaginable – will be once again be there or thereabouts at the business end of the tournament.

Notable losses: Brad Thorn, Sonny Bill Williams, Chris Jack
Notable signings: Tom Donnelly, Tom Taylor
Biggest strength: Clinical precision; Can kill a game without the opposition even getting a look in.
Weakness: Natural disasters.
One to watch: Israel Dagg

577763d6456e4383b39f5851a63e306e.jpg

The Blues, my team, are as frustrating as teaching your Grandmother to use an iPod. The Bipolar results and the win-one, lose-one nature of the team make them an extremely hard team to pick. The glory days of Blues rugby are well and truly over and have been eclipsed by the red and black domination.

They are capable of some extremely attractive rugby though, and have signed some more than handy players in the form of ‘Keep calm Piri’s on’ Weepu and Ma’a ‘Does he wear eye liner?’ Nonu. Could this be the year the power base of NZ rugby shifts back north? Hopefully, but probably not.

Notable Losses: Joe Rockoko, Luke McAlister, Jon Afoa, Winston Stanley
Notable Signings: Ma’a Nonu, Piri Weepu, Rudi Wulf, Gareth Anscombe
Biggest strength: Ability to pile on a lot of points and shock other teams into submission
Weakness: Consistency and decision making at crucial times
One to watch: Rene Ranger

79a4dfef2556128eaa15dde4b5b49a20.jpg

The Chiefs: Always have potential, very rarely deliver when it counts. For those outside of New Zealand, Wakachanchan, or the Waikato region, is an extremely proud and passionate Rugby heartland. But you wouldn’t know it. Pathetic crowd numbers and apathetic support is an all too common and sad sight to see.

This could change this year though with the likes of the most polarising three letters in New Zealand arriving in Chlamydiasville (aka Hamilton), SBW. With his arrival and the boy wonder, Aaron Cruden, new to the scene, their back line with the likes of Richard Kahui and the freakish talent Tim Nainai Williams have a real spark about them. They have one of the smartest brains in the game Wayne Smith involved, and as long as the forwards get the backs some front foot ball, the Chiefs are my dark horses of 2012.

Notable Losses: Siteveni Sivivatu, Mills Muliainia, Alec de Malmanche, Isaac Ross, Stephen Donald
Notable Signings: Sonny Bill Williams, Aaron Cruden
Biggest strength: A back line jam packed full of X factor
Weakness: Inexperience. Severe out breaks of STDs.
One to watch: Has to be Sonny

dd0e40f5f9a3a22027d35000ce2699e5.jpg

The plucky, not flashy Highlanders surprised many last year as they had some periods of impressive form. A lot of this was attributed to new coach Jamie Joseph with his hard-nosed approach and staying true to the fundamentals of good rugby: Do the hard graft upfront and the rewards will come.

The Highlanders pick up Hosea Gear and Andrew Hore in the Hurricanes carve up, adding world class grunt upfront and attacking venom out wide to a workmanlike squad. Can they be there at the end when it counts? Unfortunately I don’t think they have the depth to take them there.

Losses: Tom Donnelly
Signings: Hosea Gear, Andrew Hore
Biggest strength: Keeping it simple.
Weakness: Squad depth to last the season.
One to watch: Hosea Gear

0fbcad853db80d81c675ecbc99dca09d.jpg

At this time of year you always hear the same old catch cry about the Hurricanes, ‘Maybe this will be the year they finally win it.’ No one is saying that this year. After last years appalling year with Mark ‘all my best players have left because of me’ Hammett at the helm, this could be a train wreck of a year.

On the other hand if Hammett is successful in installing the much talked about Crusaders culture into the capital they may be able scrounge out a few victories. This once great franchise with some of Rugby’s most exciting players has been dismantled and shipped off for parts, and has a long way before they can even think about being a strong team again. I hope I’m wrong.

Notable Losses: Andrew Hore, Ma’a Nonu, Piri Weepu, Aaron Cruden, Hosea Gear, John Swalger, Rodney So’oialo, Neemia Tialata. (8 current or former All Blacks… ouch)
Signings: Half a dozen rookies and journeymen
Biggest strength: Underdog tag
Weakness: Mark Hammett
One to watch: Conrad Smith, how will he cope being the main man in an understrength squad?

This year’s Super Rugby tournament kicks off on February 24th, with the Blues vs Crusaders

Samoa beat New Zealand in dramatic Vegas Sevens final

e358ffa07758b269627a943e24775904.jpg

Samoa beat New Zealand 26-19 in a dramatic USA Sevens Final in Las Vegas, claiming their first tournament win of the season. Today we’ve got highlights for you from every day of the tournament, with some of the best tries, as well as some great tackles.

New Zealand aimed to pick up their third series win in a row but were undone by the mighty Alafoti Faosiliva with time up as the sides were tied 19-19. The huge man scored twice, with his second proving to be the winner for the Samoans, who had a huge amount of support in Vegas.

“It has been a long time and these boys have been working so hard, and I couldn’t stop a tear or two rolling down my cheeks,” said Samoa’s coach Stephen Betham. “The boys really deserve it and they owe it to the people back home and the fans here in Vegas. It has been a long time since our last Cup victory,” he added, referring to their last series win back in December 2010.

They have moved up to fifth spot on the overall standings, while New Zealand’s final placing puts them five points clear of Fiji at the top, on 92 points.

“Samoa deserved it, they came at us. We had a chance to win it, but it’s the team that makes the least errors that wins,” said New Zealand captain DJ Forbes. “But still disappointing, you have to be hurting getting that far and tripping up, but Samoa played well.”

South Africa and Fiji met for the third place playoff and it was the Fijians that won the game 21-15. Kenya won the Plate after beating Argentina 21-7, while Canada beat Australia 19-17 for the Bowl.

Below are highlights from throughout the tournament, including the final, in three short videos

Radike Samo’s IRPA Try of the Year 2011, vs New Zealand

627bce1eee05f1627642ee6b6f905e02.jpg

The IRPA Try of the Year award went to the Wallabies’ Radike Samo at the IRB Awards earlier in the week. He scored the try against the All Blacks in the Tri Nations and we featured it in the highlights then, but not on it’s own, so here’s another look at it.

It’s good to archive stuff like this, a fantastic try from a player who has been around the block. Samo has had a good run of form of late, and even turned out on the wing in the RWC. His hard running, big tackling, and good work ethic have prolonged his career to the point of him now being a Super Rugby and Tri Nations title holder.

This 60m solo effort against the All Blacks has now been recognised as the Try of the Year by the International Rugby Players Association.

“I was lucky I got there. It was good. I just ran the gap and it went from there. I didn’t realise it was 40 or 50m… the last 10m was like… argghh,” said 35 year old Samo.

“It’s a pretty awesome try for me because its my first test try. Something I’ll never forget, it’ll be there for the rest of my life so its all good,” he added.

Acura Niuqila, who played for Fiji, said that the try was typically Fijian, and shows exactly where the term ‘Flying Fijians’ comes from. ”We Fijian players are like wine… the older we get, the better we become. I’m sure there is still much more left in Samo. He is in his mature age now. Thirties is the mature age for Fijian players. They are in their best form at this age,” Niuqila said.

Kevin The Tipster – New Zealand vs France – The Final

ff0d1df208b3fb0cb7aad3056b2e3b0f.jpg

Kevin the Tipster, the results predicting sheep, has had a pretty good run so far in the RWC. A 90% success rate includes correct predictions for both Semi Finals, so today he’s had a go at the final.

You can watch the video to see who the Tipster goes for, as he aims to add to his very impressive 35 from 39 correct predictions. We can tell you though that Paddy Power have already paid out over £600,000 in winnings for those who bet on New Zealand to beat France in the final.

That’s right, according to them, the tournament is as good as over, so they’re not wasting any time. ”New Zealand has left all of their opposition so far feeling All Black and blue and it’s inevitable us bookies will be taking a hammering from them on Sunday too so punters may as well collect now,” said their head honcho.

Last weekend Paddy Power refunded Welsh punters to the value of over £200,000 following the sending off of Sam Warburton. All losing bets were scratched as they felt the call was wrong.

The All Blacks were pre-tournament favourites at 4/6 while France were available at 16/1. A final between the two sides was at set at 11/2 and France, heavy underdogs at this stage, are now at 6/1 to pull off another famous upset.

Quade Cooper – Public Enemy Number One in New Zealand

999998286be2a8ef8236facbe5f6a3c6.jpg

Wallaby flyhalf Quade Cooper has had a tough tournament so far. The Waikato native has been anything but the all singing, all dancing performer he was for the Reds in Super Rugby. He’s off form, and the Kiwis haven’t given him an inch.

Sparked by his mini-feud with All Blacks captain Richie McCaw, Cooper has become public enemy number one in New Zealand. He’s been booed at every match of the tournament. He’s not in the good books. The message? Mess with Richie, and we’ll mess with you.

Whether that has affected his game, or it’s been other factors, only the man himself will know. What is evident though is that he’s been far from himself, and under pressure not only goes into his shell and fails to deliver what he’s been known for, but he also makes mistakes, bad ones.

To beat the Wallabies you’ve got to rattle Cooper and get Will Genia’s forward pack going backwards. Ireland did it, South Africa almost did it last week, and you can be sure that the All Blacks will be targetting the immensely talented halfback combo tomorrow.

Kurtley Beale is out, injured, so Australia lose a bit of firepower there. Anthony Fainga’a comes into the midfield though, which means they tighten up on their already impressive defense. Cooper will be targeted, but with Dan Carter out and Aaron Cruden in, he may just step up.

The entertaner is due a big game and tomorrow will be a true test of the man, as a hostile and unforgiving Eden Park do all they can to prevent him from bringing out his bag of tricks.

This fascinating clip from ITV looks at the way Kiwis view him in New Zealand.

New Zealand beat France for Richie McCaw’s 100th Test cap

f13592fb424dd8dbd4468830b942bf30.jpg

All Black captain Richie McCaw notched up his well earnt 100th Test Cap earlier today when New Zealand beat France 37-17 in Auckland, to take the top place in Pool A of the Rugby World Cup. Before that, England ran riot against Romania, winning 67-3 in Dunedin.

The game had been picked as somewhat of a revenge contest for the All Blacks, who had famously been knocked out of the tournament by France in both 1999 and 2007, in the Semi Final and Quarter Final respectively. Today they put that well and truly behind them with a strong performance against a more than handy French side, who despite having an experimental halfback pairing, will be tough to beat for others.

Early on it looked as though New Zealand would run away with it as they scored a few quickfire first half tries through their brilliant backs. France managed to compete in the second half, and scored a few tries of their own. They were never really back in it though, and the hosts one this one comfortably.

The win means that they will face the runners-up of Pool B, which will probably be either Scotland or Argentina, while it looks as though France could be facing England in the quarter finals.

It was a great occasion for skipper McCaw, who not only avenged the disappointing loss in Cardiff four years ago, but achieved the fantastic milestone of picking up 100 Test Caps. McCaw, the 1017th All Black, received a silver cap in a special presentation after the match. It was handed to him by former captain, and leukemia and non-Hodgkins lymphoma sufferer, Jock Hobbs. McCaw was humbled, and clearly quite emotional when speaking.

You can view the interview below. Highlights of the game can be viewed via the RWC website.

New Zealand beat England to retain the IRB Junior World Championship title

New Zealand’s Under 20′s won their fourth successive IRB Junior World Championship title on Sunday as they saw off a valiant England effort to win the game 33-22 in Padova, Italy.

The much favoured Baby Blacks continued their dominance in the junior ranks, having now not lost a match since the tournament’s inception in 2008. They’ve now beaten England twice in finals, to add to their win over Australia last year.

England came out firing and at one stage looked as though they might have sprung an upset, but a try in the 74th minute by Beauden Barrett sealed the win for the New Zealand team, their 20th in succession.

England skipper Alex Gray was proud of the effort, but naturally disappointed. “We dug deep and fought back to within one…
