Highlights from the Gold Coast opener of the IRB Sevens World Series

62090f5e56ab19d1b2e7d2b7de66fa92.jpg

Fiji powered past reigning champions New Zealand in the opening round of the IRB World Series Sevens. Previously held in Adelaide, the Australian Sevens has now moved to the Gold Coast.

Fiji came away with a 26-12 win after having blitzed South Africa in the Semi Finals, but actually been beaten quite convincingly by New Zealand in their opening game. They shrugged off the 28-5 defeat to come back and get revenge when it mattered most.

“It is a big thing for the boys. We need a platform to start it off and this is a stepping stone to something,” said Fiji coach Etuate Waqa.

“It is very important to us, we have spoken about it, we want to go back to being number one in the world and if we can start it off like this it sets a platform that we can build on. We knew it would be physical, we just asked the boys to be composed.”

New Zealand themselves had looked typically good throughout the tournament, going into the final with a strong 26-7 win over hosts Australia. Coach Gordon Tietjens said they had plenty of positives to take from the performance however.

“We might have played well against Fiji in the pool but the team can turn around and do exactly the same to you. Lots to play for going to Dubai, we know we are good enough. The boys will be kicking themselves and we had set some good standards,” he said.

Wales won the Plate Final, Argentina claimed the Bowl, while Papua New Guinea took the Shield.

Below are highlights of both days of play, with the final being featured in the second video. It’s posted as a playlist so hit Play to watch both, or select only the second video if you prefer. Enjoy.

The Alternate Plays of the Rugby World Cup 2011

588d3c2269a065cb9feda3dd98418199.jpg

It’s been a few weeks since the World Cup finished but there’s still a few things to look back on, so today we’ve got some alternate plays of the tournament for you. We also have a bit of an update as to what’s been going on with the site.

You may have noticed that in the past few days there haven’t been any new updates. That’s because we have been upgrading to a new and improved server that promises to be a lot faster, reliable, and cost efficient (that means expensive, but we’re staying positive).

We’ve also got a much anticipated Try Savers and Rib Breakers RWC Edition that is nearly ready to be posted, so that’s exciting news. That’ll be ready in the next couple of weeks hopefully.

The Heineken Cup kicks off shortly too and we’ve got a bucketload of match tickets to give away to RD users, so keep your eyes and ears peeled for that one, as well as a few other giveaways.

As always please keep a lookout for new clips you think can be featured on the site, as there’s lots happening in the Aviva Premiership, Top 14, and RadoDirect Pro 12 at the moment.

Today though this is just a quick look back the 2011 Rugby World Cup, and some of Reunion’s plays of the tournament, which includes best offload, falcon, try, handling skills, and a few others.

Rugby World Cup 2011 Team of the Tournament

fa5f3edcd522ce777ec8168c4d60ace4.jpg

Rugby World Cup 2011 finished just over a week ago, so since then a few different sectors of the media have been stringing together their respective Teams of the Tournament. Here’s a few to mill over, as well as a surprisingly balanced one from Reunion in New Zealand.

Today we take a look at who impressed the most at the tournament, and how selections vary across the board for a RWC 2011 dream team. We also welcome your selections, as it’s always a hotly debated topic among fans.

The main video here is from the Reunion show in New Zealand. They have a nicely balanced team that quite refreshingly features players from a number of different countries. It would have been tempting for them to shove in a whole load of All Blacks, but as you’ll see, they only have five.

Below are another three teams from three different sources. There’s a few common trends, namely with Lionel Nallet, Jerome Kaino, and Israel Dagg all being picked. There’s also a few positional switches, and allowance for injured players in some cases.

The Guardian
1. Tony Woodcock (New Zealand), 2. Marius Tincu (Romania), 3. Adam Jones (Wales), 4. Brad Thorn (New Zealand), 5. Lionel Nallet (France), 6. Jerome Kaino (New Zealand), 7. David Pocock (Australia), 8. Imanol Harinordoquy (France), 9. Mike Phillips (Wales), 10. Dan Carter (New Zealand), 11. George North (Wales), 12. Jamie Roberts (Wales), 13. Conrad Smith (New Zealand), 14. Vincent Clerc (France), 15. Israel Dagg (New Zealand)

New Zealand Herald
1. Cian Healey (Ireland) 2. Stephen Moore (Australia) 3.Owen Franks (New Zealand) 4. Lionel Nallet (France) 5. Victor Matfield (South Africa) 6. Jerome Kaino (New Zealand) 7. Sean O’Brien (Ireland) 8. Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe (Argentina) 9. Dimitri Yachvilli (France) 10. Rhys Priestland (Wales) 11 George North (Wales) 12 Ma’a Nonu (New Zealand) 13. Brian O’Driscoll (Ireland) 14. James O’Connor (Australia) 15. Israel Dagg (New Zealand)

ITV
1. Jean-Baptiste Poux (France) 2. Keven Mealamu (New Zealand) 3. Adam Jones (Wales) 4. Brad Thorn (New Zealand) 5. Lionel Nallet (France) 6. Jerome Kaino (New Zealand) 7. Sam Warburton (Wales) 8. Imanol Harinorduquy (France) 9. Mike Phillips (Wales) 10. Rhys Priestland (Wales) 11. James O’Connor (Australia) 12. Ma’a Nonu (New Zealand) 13. Jamie Roberts (Wales) 14. Vincent Clerc (France) 15. Israel Dagg (New Zealand)

Have a look through these, as well as the Reunion selection, and let us know what you think.

This is the game – A breakdown of the 2011 Rugby World Cup

81bc1f403cef14478e6225c2587100fc.jpg

Will Carling, Zinzan Brooke, Rob Henderson, Scott Quinnell, and Matt Burke are back for the final episode of TITG to discuss the final of the Rugby World Cup, and which other moments stood out for them. It was an interesting discussion, with all the usual banter.

Depending on which side of the fence you sit, this RWC was either thoroughly enjoyable, or fairly disappointing. Taking your teams performance out of the equation, what were the stand out moments for you? The guys on the panel go through theirs.

The topic of France naturally came up, as nobody ever expected them to make the final based on their form, but once there, they were just a few points away from upsetting New Zealand yet again and becoming World Champions. Tonga beating them proved to be a favourite moment for many though.

Zinzan Brooke, champion in 1987, explains how things have changed since then and that there were no victory parades or organised events. They also went to work on the Monday morning, unlike the class of 2011, who are still out partying as they’ve had a week of taking the cup around the country.

Matt Burke also recounts a hilarious story about Stephen Larkham, who so famously got his team into the final in 1999 – also against France – by beating the Springboks for a shock 40m dropgoal. There’s a few other great stories and comments too. It’s an enjoyable breakdown of the RWC.

All Blacks win the 2011 Rugby World Cup – France challenge the Haka

bce1ab9075f62db4f2efb5d46f6427d6.jpg

The All Blacks put their 24 year nightmare behind them as they beat France 8-7 in the lowest scoring Rugby World Cup final ever. France came to play, and made their intentions clear just before kick off as they challenged the Haka in a unique way.

Wearing their white away strip, France linked arms and formed a ‘flying V’ before marching forwards towards the All Blacks, making it clear they weren’t going to simply make up the numbers in this one, their third RWC final.

“I wasn’t alone, I had my teammates with me. I felt them close to me — too close at one stage, because they wanted to go across the field and hug New Zealand,” captain Thierry Dusautoir said.

“It was necessary to calm them down. But it’s a great moment we’ll all remember. I felt during the week that the players wanted to do something during the haka, like they did in 2007. Someone came to see us, who I won’t name, who told us this idea. We thought of it this morning.”

Prop Fabien Barcella was one of the Frenchman who continued forward, having to be held back at times. “It was a ‘V’ for victory, quite simply. It’s the chance of a lifetime to play a final at Eden Park, we didn’t want to miss out on it,” Barcella said.

“It came from the heart, and showed that the 30 of us were together tonight.”

Francois Trinh-Duc, the flyhalf who started off the bench, said that the players needed to make an impression on their opponent. “We had to throw down the challenge to them,” Trinh-Duc said.

“It’s a special moment for the All Blacks, so we wanted a special moment for ourselves as well. It was a way of defying them, letting them know we were there. I think they were surprised, they weren’t expecting it, so I think it worked,” he said.

What did you think of what France did in response to the Haka?

Highlights from the match can be viewed on the official RWC website. Other clips and coverage will continue on RD over the next few days. Please get in touch if there’s anything you’d like featured.

Rugby World Cup Daily, IRB Rankings, and IRB Awards

ca5511194a5ee202b9a2863d8adcd66c.jpg

New Zealand have been partying hard since Richie McCaw lifted the William Webb Ellis trophy at Eden Park on Sunday. Rugby World Cup Daily covers the build up to it, and the reactions after the win. The IRB Awards evening has also taken place, and there’s been an update in the IRB World Rankings.

A ticker tape parade through the streets of Auckland was greeted by hundreds of thousands of All Black fans as the team, coaches, and support staff showed off the much sought after trophy. The same thing will happen in other parts of New Zealand over the next few days.

They’ve also attended the IRB Awards Evening, where the All Blacks picked up Team of the Year, and Graham Henry got Coach of the Year. Also in attendance were France, with their captain Thierry Dusautoir earning the prestigious IRB Player of the Year title.

“This tournament was hard for me because we had our ups and downs. After the Tonga game it was really hard for all of the boys, but then we had the the quarters, semi and final, a great semi, and we are happy to be here, even if we’re also disappointed,” he said.

Other notable awards went to Cecil Afrika as IRB Sevens Player of the Year, England’s George Ford got the IRB Junior Player of the Year award, and Radike Samo picked up the IRPA Try of the Year.

The IRB Official World Rankings were released today, with New Zealand unsurprisingly staying on top after their World Cup win. Australia, who came third after beating Wales, stay second, while France and South Africa are at third and fourth respectively. Wales’ loss to Australia cost them, as they finish the tournament in eighth place despite reaching the semi finals.

Below are the current Top 20 teams. You can view an explanation of how the rankings work here.

Rugby World Cup Daily – France to wear white as Craig Joubert gets final

2f108acd1580e1a410ad8dbb50f74c7a.jpg

After another weekend of controversy, the referee for the World Cup final between New Zealand and France has been named as South African Craig Joubert. In other news, France will wear white in the final, so New Zealand can wear their traditional black.

In 2007 France famously beat New Zealand in Cardiff with the All Blacks forced to wear their alternate grey strip that clearly didn’t work out too well for them. This year France won the coin toss to determine the home side, but allowed New Zealand to have the choice of wearing their famous black kit.

“We decided to allow the All Blacks the choice to play in black. For us it is a sign of respect and a way for our team to thank New Zealanders for a remarkable World Cup,” said French team manager Jo Maso.

“It is an honour to play the All Blacks when they play in their black jerseys and it is logical with the World Cup final being held at Eden Park,” he added.

The gesture seemed a little lost of Graham Henry though. “We’re the All Blacks, we’re playing at home and we wear black, so it’s an obvious one. But I do thank him,” he said.

0f062075b7635da6b0e73cea961d358d.jpg

The other big news of the day is that France are now ranked third in the world, having moved into that position following their win over Wales on the weekend. Wales drop to sixth but can make up ground with a third place play off win. Australia remain second despite their loss to New Zealand, while South Africa move out of the top three for the first time in a while.

Craig Joubert will take charge of the final after having had a solid tournament with the whistle. In today’s RWC Daily there’s a bit of a chat with him, some random cooking classes, and New Zealand coach Henry talks about preparing for the World Cup Final.
