Rugby Club Plays of the Week 2012 – Round 11

Here is a quick catch-up post for the Rugby Club’s Plays of the Week from Fox Sports, which was broadcast on Thursday night in Australia. As always, it features the best of the action from Super Rugby, and in this case, Round 11.
It’s been a busy weekend and there’s loads to catch up on and sift through, but this, even though it’s for last weekend’s round, is another classic so it’s well worth watching.
Please note that we’ve also got highlights up from this weekend’s Super Rugby games (except for the Reds vs Chiefs – that was this morning), so have a browse through all of them in our Super Rugby Highlights section. Some of the quality is poor, but we’ll get that sorted asap too.
Tomorrow we’ve got a few clips lined up for that include a few red cards for flying fists, some Sevens stuff, and the last two episode of School of Hard Knocks.
If you spotted anything over the weekend that you’d like featured, please get in touch. That can be for a hit, try, funny, etc. Let us know, send as many details as possible, and we’ll see if we can track it down and hopefully share with you, and other rugby fans, here on the site.

Edinburgh Rugby upset Toulouse in Heinenken Cup Quarter Final

Edinburgh knocked four times champions Toulouse out of the Heineken Cup in their Quarter Final meeting at a vocal Murrayfield on Saturday. The 19-14 win sets them up to play Ulster next, a first ever semi final for a Scottish side in European Rugby.
The home side couldn’t have started better as they scored through scrumhalf Mike Blair within ninety seconds of kickoff. Flyhalf Greig Laidlaw kept things ticking over with the boot but they were later reduced to thirteen men when both Alan Jacobson and Ross Rennie were yellow carded.
Fijian flyer Timoci Matanavou scored an incredible try during that period, but Toulouse Hooker William Servat later received a card of his own, and Edinburgh hung on for a historic win over the giants fo French rugby. “We are absolutely over the moon,” said Man of the Match, Laidlaw.
“The players put in a great shift out there. We struggled in the first half with 13 men but we managed to stay in the game and I think that won us the game.”
Despite being sin-binned for a synical offence, prop Jacobson was ecstatic come the final whistle, citing the great atmosphere and strong attendance as a huge motivating factor for his team.Â
“It doesnât get any better than this! It is impossible to accurately measure the effect the fans had on the contest â but it sure was massive. I told the guys in the dressing room beforehand that it was our big opportunity to make history and the supporters helped us do just that.
“The crowd were unreal, both in terms of numbers and the noise they made. We had some great crowds and great games in the past but this was another level altogether. It was like an international. In fact the noise was even louder â amazing,” he added.
Toulouse attempted a late fightback, but with time almost up the home side were awarded another penalty, which sealed the victory. “I asked the ref if I could stand for a minute and kick it into touch, but he said ânoâ so I decided to go for the post,” explained Laidlaw.
“I still thought about blasting it left and dead, but they are huge dead-ball areas at Murrayfield, and I might not have made it, so I said âIâm going for itâ and fortunately for me it sailed through.”

Cheetahs come from behind to beat Hurricanes in Super Rugby thriller

The Cheetahs and Hurricanes played some incredible rugby in what was an action packed Super Rugby game in Wellington on Saturday. The visitors looked blown away early on, then fought back and secured a 47-38 win, their second on tour.
The dynamic Hurricanes played some scintilating rugby in the first half of this fast paced game, racing off to a 32-11 lead. Julian Savea, Andre Taylor, and Beauden Barritt all played their part.
The visiting Cheetahs kept their composure though and fought back admirably, tying things up at 32-32 going into halftime, thanks to three tries in seven minutes.
Prop Coenie Oosthuizen scored twice, and despite flyhalf Barritt scoring 23 points in total for the home side, the Cheetahs dominated territory and possesion to pull off a famous win.
“It was definitely a great victory, and it’s a nice way to end off the tour,” said captain Adriaan Strauss. “They’ve [his players] got their never-say-die attitude. It’s a good place for us to start building on now for when we get home.
“We definitely want to keep that momentum going that we got from beating the Hurricanes. But we aren’t kidding ourselves, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done,” he added.
His side now travel back to South Africa to take on the Lions, having left New Zealand and Australia with a 2-2 record, following courageous losses to both the Brumbies and the Crusaders.

Rugby Club Plays of the Week 2012 – Round 4

It’s that time of the week as we catch up on what happened in the previous round of Super Rugby action, with the Rugby Club Plays of the Week from Fox Sports.
This week Sean Maloney takes us back to 2003 with some vintage stuff from Carlos Spencer and the Blues. You will have seen that try in the compilation that was posted on here a few weeks back, featuring the best of King Carlos in that year. Incredible stuff.
Back to Round 4 of Super Rugby, and some of the tries featured come from the Cheetahs, who picked up a dramatic win against the Rebels, and from the Force against the Waratahs.
Cory Jane had a bit of a ‘sexy and I know it’ moment against the Highlanders, right in the face of Jimmy Cowan. This morning he did a similar thing to another AB halfback teamate, Piri Weepu, after he handed him off to score a try in the Blues vs Hurricanes classic.
In the big hits section have a look at young Julian Savea tearing up the opposition. He’s becoming a real threat out wide and this could be the season where he’ll push for higher honours.
Wales even managed to sneak into this one, with a shoutout for their Grand Slam win. Enjoy, and as always, please share the post with your friends, and let us know if you enjoyed it.
Rugby Club Plays of the Week 2012 – Round 3

So we’re heading into another weekend of rugby which includes, amongst other great goings on, Round 4 of Super Rugby down south. Here’s a look at a crowd favourite, as the Rugby Club in Aus brings us the Plays of the Week.
Probably the biggest talking point of the week was that moment of madness after the Bulls vs Blues match, where a fan came onto the field and tossed a water bottle at Keven Mealamu’s head.
“Weâve had this sort of thing in New Zealand as well… I still love the place (South Africa). The incident caught me by surprise, that’s all,” said Mealamu when speaking about it earlier this week.
The game itself was actually a good one, as were many others on the weekend, with some great tries scored. We get to some of the best in this week’s Plays as Sean Maloney, who actually made his full commentary debut, talks us through the best and worst of the round.
There’s also some big hits, including that Motu Matu’u monster tackle on Matt Hodgson that was featured here a few days back, and one or two other belters that are worth checking out too.Â
On a side note, the best way for you to let us know you enjoy something on here is by leaving a quick comment to say so. Last week this feature didn’t get too much of a response, so this week if you can, please take a minute to leave one.
If you’re not registered to post already, you can do so here now, or you can just leave a guest comment, but remember, with guest comments you need to validate via email each time.

Rugby Club Plays of the Week 2012 – Round 2

It’s been a busy week, and even busier weekend so far, so here’s a quick look at another great Plays of the Week from Fox Sports, which focusses on round 2 of Super Rugby. As usual, there’s the usual serving of great hits, tries, and hilarious bloopers. Enjoy.
Hong Kong Beach 5′s – Rugby vs Netball Advert
This brilliant advert is for the Hong Kong 5′s, a beach rugby tournament that is in it’s second year, and takes place a week before the famous Hong Kong Sevens.
The advert itself is shot in Call of Duty style and announces the addition of Netball to the event. Hong Kong Sevens internationals Keith Robertson and Ally Maclay are in the video, as well as other domestic players. The Hong Kong 5′s take place on Repulse Bay Beach on the 17th/18th March.
Super Rugby 2012 Profiles – The South African teams

We’re now into Super Rugby 2012 season so after having looked at what the Kiwis and Aussies have on offer, it’s time scope out the South African talent, as New Zealand’s own Tony O’Sullivan talks us through each of the teams from the Republic.

Bulls fans will be a little nervous this year as many of their legendary senior players are moving on. It’s up to a largely youthful and inexperienced squad to continue the legacy of this dominant South African franchise.
There is still a fair amount of quality in the team though. Number eight Pierre Spies, a truly terrifying man, will captain the side this year. He runs at teams like he’s starving and there is boerewors (big South African sausage) on the other side of the defensive line.
Francois Hougaard, one of the standout players at the World Cup will partner up with Morne Steyn making for a lethal halves pairing. Can the Bulls win their 4th Super Rugby championship? For me, not this year, theyâre too inexperienced. This season will be looked back on as part of their rebuilding phase.
Notable Losses: Victor Matfield, Bakies Botha, Guthro Steenkamp, Gary Botha, Fourie du Preez, Danie Rossow
Notable Signings: Johan Sadie, JJ Engelbrecht, Lionel Cronje, Jano Vermaak.
Biggest Strength: Great options of the back of rucks mails and scrums.
Biggest Weakness: Squad depth and inexperience. Over consumption of meat.
One to watch: Francois Hougaard.

The Sharks, or Shorks as some of their fans would call them, have an exciting young line up. They too saw some of their greats leave in the post world cup exodus, most notably John Smit. That finally leaves the door nice and open for arguably the world’s best hooker, Bismark du Plessis.
In order to bring some more experience into the squad, the Sharks have made some interesting purchases. Frederick ‘that was a forward pass’ Michalak is an option at 9 and 10, while Marius Joubert, who may be a little long in the tooth, has heaps of knowledge that he will be able to pass down to the players around him.
As far as other players, there is class all over the park but I’m looking forward to seeing Patrick Lambie and former cheetah Riaan Viljoen show us their true potential in 2012. Is it the Sharksâ year? Could be.
Notable Losses: John Smit, Stefan Terblanche, Adrian Jacobs.
Notable Signings:Â Frederick Michalak, Marius Joubert, Riaan Viljoen
Biggest Strength: Starting test players all of over the park.
Biggest Weakness: Inability to earn bonus points has cost them big in the past.
One to watch: Bismark du Plessis.

The Lions. This pride is about as scary as a packed lunch. They’ve proved that they’re consistent in Super Rugby, not finishing inside the top 10 since 2002. Is that all about to change? They did win the 2011 Currie Cup, so confidence and belief must be high within this struggling franchise.
There is a Kiwi influence within the team with two of NZ’s most talented and infamous exports, John ‘we’re on a journey’ Mitchell as the head coach, and King Carlos Spencer as the backs coach.
Could these cellar dwellers, with a little help from a couple of sheep shaggers, finally make a decent splash in Super Rugby? With new signing Butch James and the momentum of the Currie Cup they can definitely improve on past efforts.
Notable Losses: Burton Francis, Andre Pretorius, Jano Vermaak.
Notable Signings: Butch James, Ross Cronje, Guy Cronje
Biggest Strength: Self belief after Currie Cup win.
Biggest Weakness: Travelling out of the republic.
One to watch: Derick Minnie.

The Cheetahs, theyâre a bit of an odd bunch. On paper they look like a quality side but unfortunately injury and a lack of depth beyond the starting 15 has cost them and their fans any results to be really proud of. They have a mouth watering loose trio with the likes of Heinrich Brossow, Juan Smith and Ashley Johnson, and a powerful front row.
Their back line lacks fire power though and would hardly strike fear into the hearts of their opponents. With Andries Strauss holding them together, and if much talked about Johan Goosen gets an opportunity, they could yet turn a few heads and upset some more fancied opposition.
But itâs the same old story with the Cheetahs, it’s always if this and maybe that and in the course of a Super Rugby season injuries will happen and they’ve shown time and again that they simply don’t have the depth to adapt their side when the proverbial hits the fan.
Notable Losses: Sarel Pretorius, Wilhelm Steenkamp, Kabamba Floors.
Notable Signings: No one of note.
Biggest Strength: Loose forward trio.
Biggest Weakness: Bloemfontein
One to watch: Johan Goosen – the up and comer can get penalties over from 65 metres+ !!

The Stormers strike me as the Hurricanes of South Africa – they always have a great squad and often look unbeatable during the regular season, but they never quite get over the line. The Stormers however are in better shape than the Canes this year, but there is still nothing to indicate they will win in 2012.
Their main strike weapon Bryan ‘I used to be awesome’ Habana, is looking like there is a reason wingers are generally not that great later into their careers and I just get the feeling this will be another almost year for the Newlands based franchise.
They have a great squad and a good chance of winning the South African conference, but with the loss of Francois Louw and Jaque Fourie to sides abroad, it’s unlikely that they will have the goods to go all the way in Super Rugby this season.
Notable Losses: Jaque Fourie, Francois Louw, Ricky Januarie, CJ van der Linde.
Notable Signings: JP du Plessis, Joe Pieterson
Biggest Strength: Can play the complete game and look like world beaters.
Biggest Weakness: Semi Finals and Finals.
One to watch: Gio Aplon.

A look at the first ever White Card in Super Rugby

There’s been a fair bit of confusion since the introduction of the new White Card in Super Rugby. Last weekend we saw one issued for a tip-tackle, so here’s a quick look at that, as well as an explanation of how the process works.
The new white card system is being trialled in this year’s tournament in an effort to streamline and simplify the citing procedure. There are no changes to the issuing of the standard yellow and red cards, but the white card can now be used to indicate that further inspection may be required.
So if a referee suspects foul play, or sees something but isn’t quite sure on how to judge it in the heat of the moment, he can pass it on to the citing commisioner, who will then deal with it later on. This was the case with Cheetahs center Andries Pretorious last weekend, who made a dangerous tackle on Wickus Van Heerden of the Lions.
A yellow card was given, and whether or not it should have been a straight red card was to be determined with the showing of the white card. Strauss accepted a guilty plea within the stipulated four-hour time period, thus guaranteeing him a lesser sentence than if it went to a full judiciary.
He was given a two week suspension after the tackle was deemed not intentional. Other issues were also taken into account and the decision was reduced or ‘discounted’ by two weeks for remorse, an early plea, and an admission of guilt. He also apologised personally to Van Heerden, who had ‘residual neurological symptoms assumed to be from bruising.’
There are also other new elements in the citing procedure, such as an Off-Field Yellow Card. Two of these were actually issued this weekend, with Tristan Moran and Jason Eaton, both of the Hurricanes, being given off-field yellow cards after review of two seperate incidents. One was for a shoulder charge, and the other for stamping.
An off-field yellow card can be issued when the Citing Commisioner sees an act of foul play that is considered close to, but not quite, a red card. These have no immediate affect, but get logged on the player’s disciplinary record, much in the same way as an on-field yellow card would.
What do you think of the new concept, and do you think the IRB should take it on board in future?
Rugby Club Plays of the Week 2012 – Round 1

This year’s Super Rugby is hotting up right the way across New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia. As we head into week two, here’s a quick look back on the best of round one, courtesy our friends at The Rugby Club on Fox Sports.
In week one things were pretty evenly matched with the biggest points differential being 13 in the Stormers vs Hurricanes game, after that the next highest was just 5. Most games were tight and went down to the final minutes, but in fairness didn’t produce the kind of flair we’ve come to expect.
We were however treated to some big hits, funny moments, and a few excellent tries, so as has become the norm here on RD, we’re sharing them in the form of the Plays of the Week from the Rugby Club in Australia, put together by the man that can, Sean Maloney.
We’ve featured highlights of all the games in our Super Rugby Extra section, and will continue to do so, but will also put together some best tries and hits videos over the next few weeks, as well as post the best random bits here and there.
So if you’re watching Super Rugby this weekend and see something you think should be on the site, please don’t hesitate to contribute with your knowledge of it, or even better, a video that’s sliced, diced and ready to go. For now, here are round one’s Plays of the Week.
Gloucester and Harlequins score classic tries in great game of rugby

Jonny May scored a fantastic try as Gloucester beat league leaders Harlequins 29-23 in an Aviva Premiership classic at Kingsholm on Saturday night. There were some positives for Quins though as they scored a brilliant late try to seal a bonus point.
Gloucester’s tries were scored by Charlie Sharples, Akapusi Qera, and May while Freddie Burns kicked four penalties and a conversion. James Simpson-Daniel was on top form too, setting up Sharples’ try and showing that well known flair we’ve come to expect from the now 29 year old.
Fullback May, who scored a genuine contender for try of the season, says that Simpson-Daniel has had a huge influence on him. “Sinbad (Simpson-Daniel) and Tom Voyce are both gurus in that back-three position. They are great mentors for Charlie and me, and we’ve got massive respect for both of them. James is still class, he’s still a world-class player.
“That first try, he created that through a fantastic piece of skill. Fair play to him to still be world-class after 250 games. He’s a great guy to have around, an inspiration, a great mentor and someone to learn from.
“If ever we need to pick his brain he’s always there for us, and that’s invaluable. He’s more than just a finisher. Give him the ball and he can always finish, but his ability to create is what sets him apart and his work for the first try is the prime example really.”
Ross Chisholm scored two tries for Harlequins, his second a brilliant consolation effort which gave Nick Evans a chance at getting the bonus point, but all the talk has been of May’s try, and the way he darted through the defence with ease.
“I think they were quite cautious about covering across and so that left a little gap to step back inside. I managed to find the gap and then I could get away. I’m not really sure what I’m going to do, then I do something and five seconds later I’m over the line,” he said.
Do you think some of the players on show in this game should be playing for England?
