Shane Williams scores in extra time in farewell home game for Ospreys
Shane Williams clearly knows how to do farewells. Not content with scoring with the final touch of the ball in his last ever game for Wales, he did the same again this weekend for the Ospreys, only on this occasion he stepped up and converted it too.
On Friday the fantastic Shane Williams documentary was posted here, a piece by the BBC that charted the life and success of Williams, who is in his final ever season of rugby.
The retiring winger played what could be his last ever home game for Ospreys on Friday night, billed as his farewell match, and he didn’t disappoint.
As with his final Wales game against Australia in December, he didn’t get much of the ball and the night didn’t quite go his way. That is until injury time, as he sealed the Ospreys 31-12 win in style in front of their largest crowd in over a year, 14,468 fans.
With Ospreys safe in the top four of the RaboDirect Pro12, a home semi final spot is all but assured, which means that we actually might be seeing Williams again, for yet another farewell match.
“I’m not injured, which is great, and I’m there in contention for selection. I would never say no. If selected, great,” said Williams. “Itâs not the end of the line yet even if I’m not selected by the Ospreys because I’m involved with the Barbarians.
“But, if selected, I will certainly give my utmost in all the games,” he added.

Keven Mealamu struck with bottle after Bulls vs Blues game
Here’s a look at incident everyone is talking about, when Keven Mealamu was struck on the head with a water bottle by a pitch-invader at full time in the Bulls vs Blues Super Rugby game. The man in question was arrested immediately following the altercation.
At just short of fulltime in their game at Loftus Versveld in Pretoria, the Bulls scored a late try through winger Bjorn Basson, setting them up for a losing bonus point conversion attempt from Morne Steyn, who duly slotted the kick.
Basson was dived on by Rene Ranger though, in a covering tackle that was deemed illegal and resulted in a yellow and white card being shown. Ranger has since been suspended for two matches, after his tackle was deemed to have been reckless and late.Â
What followed was pretty ugly as Bulls fans were angry at not only the tackle, but the decision from referee Steve Walsh to not award a penalty restart on the halfway line.
A Bulls fan evaded security and took to the field to ‘see if Basson was all right’. Mealamu had come across to shake hands with Basson and as the two walked off, he tossed the water bottle in their direction, hitting the Blues skipper on the back of the head.
Mealamu was shocked and angry but restrained himself before the man, named as Johannes Nel, was taken away by security and immediately arrested.
Nel has since claimed that was simply passing the bottle to Basson after he left it behind. He has since apologised to everybody involved, and has been charged with common assault, but the docket was reportedly not enrolled as it was up to Mealamu or the Blues to initiate further proceedings.
Blues team manager Bryce Anderson said that Mealamu wasn’t injured, just shocked.
The Blues Bulls Company has issued a full apology to the Blues on behalf of their board, managers, team, and supporters. Mealamu and Anderson accepted the apology and were reportedly impressed with the handling of the matter.
Loftus is known to be a hostile place to play rugby, and this incident – along with the filth that was being spouted from the sidelines afterwards – will further tarnish the image of fans in that region.

Gloucester and Harlequins score classic tries in great game of rugby
Jonny May scored a fantastic try as Gloucester beat league leaders Harlequins 29-23 in an Aviva Premiership classic at Kingsholm on Saturday night. There were some positives for Quins though as they scored a brilliant late try to seal a bonus point.
Gloucester’s tries were scored by Charlie Sharples, Akapusi Qera, and May while Freddie Burns kicked four penalties and a conversion. James Simpson-Daniel was on top form too, setting up Sharples’ try and showing that well known flair we’ve come to expect from the now 29 year old.
Fullback May, who scored a genuine contender for try of the season, says that Simpson-Daniel has had a huge influence on him. “Sinbad (Simpson-Daniel) and Tom Voyce are both gurus in that back-three position. They are great mentors for Charlie and me, and we’ve got massive respect for both of them. James is still class, he’s still a world-class player.
“That first try, he created that through a fantastic piece of skill. Fair play to him to still be world-class after 250 games. He’s a great guy to have around, an inspiration, a great mentor and someone to learn from.
“If ever we need to pick his brain he’s always there for us, and that’s invaluable. He’s more than just a finisher. Give him the ball and he can always finish, but his ability to create is what sets him apart and his work for the first try is the prime example really.”
Ross Chisholm scored two tries for Harlequins, his second a brilliant consolation effort which gave Nick Evans a chance at getting the bonus point, but all the talk has been of May’s try, and the way he darted through the defence with ease.
“I think they were quite cautious about covering across and so that left a little gap to step back inside. I managed to find the gap and then I could get away. I’m not really sure what I’m going to do, then I do something and five seconds later I’m over the line,” he said.

No date confirmed yet for postponed Six Nations game
The Six Nations council met yesterday and have said that they are yet to set a date for the replay of the game between France and Ireland in Paris. The game was called off within minutes of kickoff on Saturday night due to a frozen pitch.
Thousands of fans packed the Stade De France for what should have been a fascinating game of rugby. It certainly was interesting to watch, but the game never kicked off and 80 000 or so, both French and travelling Irish, were left wondering what on earth was going on.
Referee Dave Pearson took to the field a few minutes earlier and after doing all they can, it was decided that the field simply wasn’t safe enough for the game to go on. It was after 9pm in winter in Paris, with temperatures below freezing.
“Player welfare and safety is the primary concern for the IRB and its match officials. Having witnessed and assessed the rapid deterioration of the playing surface between the final pitch inspection and the scheduled kick-off time, and following consultation with the match official team, both coaches and championship organisers, Pearson deemed the pitch unplayable on player welfare grounds,” said statement from the IRB.
The challenge now is to find the best date for the game, with it looking likely that it will be the first weekend of March. While those who attended are able to return with their tickets, it’s probably scant consolation considering the costs involved from both Ireland and the south of France.Â
“Further to a meeting of the Six Nations Council today, we can confirm that the postponed RBS 6 Nations France versus Ireland match will not take place this weekend (Feb 17/18/19),” they said in a statement on Monday.
“A further meeting of the Council will take place tomorrow to hopefully resolve the issues of rescheduling and ticket policy. There are very significant logistical issues arising from this situation, and we would wish to be in a position to give a comprehensive clarification following the meeting.”
If it’s played on March 3rd, it would mean France and Ireland would have to play four successive games. There’s also the issue of the Top 14 clubs wanting their players back for that weekend, with some big fixtures lined up, including Clermont Auvergne vs Toulouse.
A decision confirming the date of the replay will be made today, earliest. It was the first time a Six Nations game has been called off because of weather conditions in over 25 years.

Romain Poite enjoys the funny game, but Geordan Murphy disagrees
Leicester Tigers were frustrated by Ulster in round 5 of the Heineken Cup a few weeks back as they went down 41-7 at Ravenhill. Tempers boiled over in the second half, but referee Romain Poite maintained he was enjoying it.
Poite was criticised by Murphy after the game for his handling of various aspects, particularly the scrum, where the Tigers captain felt that everything went against them.
“The guys in the front row were frustrated with the way the scrum was refereed,” Murphy said.
“But we kicked away too much ball when we had it and we let ourselves get frustrated while they were composed. It was a very disappointing performance by us. However, it was a great one by them and you can’t say anything other than the better team on the night won the match.
“There is no point in crying over spilt milk,” he added.
Referee Poite had sent prop Dan Cole off in the first few minutes of the game, and things went downhill for Leciester from there. When Ben Youngs threw a bit of a tantrum in the 60th minute, Poite, Murphy, and Ulster captain Johan Muller came together for this rather amusing exchange.Â
“It’s a funny game. I enjoy, and I think you enjoy,” said Poite, to which Murphy replied quite frankly, “No I don’t.”
Despite the language barrier, Poite did a good job of defusing the situation and calming everything down for a bit, as well as allowing Murphy to to provide his blunt, honest response.

Wallabies crush the Barbarians in Matfield’s farewell game
The Barbarians disappointed a Twickenham crowd of 51 212 as they went down 60-11 to a far more organised and determined Wallaby team. It was also a farewell for Victor Matfield, who captained the Barbarians in his final game, but had no joy on the day.Â

Perhaps the festive catching up during the week was to blame for such a weak all round performance.Â
“It was a fantastic week and, even though we lost the game by so many points, I will remember it for a long time. When you come up for the Barbarians you don’t have a lot of training, so some days you click, other days you struggle a bit,” he said.Â
“Maybe the communication wasn’t there, there were one or two slipped tackles and then the other side get momentum and it’s hard to stop. Australia are a full international side and they know each other pretty well.
“The Barbarians have two out of three now in the last three years against the southern hemisphere teams so why shoot them down after one bad game? I think it’s a fantastic idea and we need this in rugby,” added Matfield, who will now take on a coaching role within the Bulls setup.Â

American Football â The Origins of a Great Game

I love football. Every year I eagerly await the fall season not just for the cooler weather and the change of color on the leaves of the trees, but also because it means the start of the football season as well. Anticipation builds inside me at the thought of watching my team take the field once again and make a run for the top spot in their division.
I’ve been a fan of the game, and the same team, for decades. I have watched the players, the teams, and even the football industry evolve and change over time. American football has remained one of the most exciting and beautiful games in all of professional sports. For all its appeal, just how and where did American football originate? All sports have their beginnings and what I found out left me appreciating the game even more.
During the early 1800′s a popular game known as rugby, where a football is kicked at a goal and run over a line, had its beginnings at the famous Rugby Boy’s School in England. Around the same time in America, the emergence of a game called “ballown”, similar to Rugby, was played by a group of students from Princeton. East coast prep schools like Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, and Rutgers College also competed in football-type games. At that time these early games resembled the more traditional “mob football” style played in England. The rules were simple with large numbers of players trying to advance the ball into a goal area usually by any means necessary. By 1855 manufactured inflatable balls were being used as football evolved into a kicking and running game.
Since there weren’t many rules established, violence and injury were common due to the roughness of the game. The increasing brutality of the game became such a public concern because of so many injuries and deaths, that some universities banned it. President Theodore Roosevelt even threatened to ban the game and urged Harvard, Princeton, and Yale to help make changes or lose the sport. Eventually the Intercollegiate Football Association was formed by representatives of Harvard, Columbia, and Princeton to establish a new code of rules mainly based on the rugby games.
The man responsible for shaping American football as we know it today was Walter Camp. He enrolled at Yale in 1876 and led the IFA’s rules committee. He proposed reducing the number of players from 15 to 11. He helped establish the line of scrimmage and the snap from center to quarterback. Camp also proposed that teams be required to advance the ball a minimum of five yards within three downs. More changes were instituted like the reduced size of the playing field, scoring rules, and game time. By 1887 a paid referee and an umpire were mandated for each game and tackling below the waist was allowed. In 1889 officials were given whistles and stopwatches. The forward pass, one of the most important changes in the game, didn’t become legal until 1906.
Although the rules were changing, football continued to be played violently in the style of the earlier mob games. Changes had to be made to make the game safer. These changes were discussed on December 28, 1905 by sixty-two schools who met in New York City. Eventually the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was formed as a result. Over a century later college football continues to thrive as one of the most popular collegiate games.  After the demise of the IFA, the American Professional Football Association was formed in 1920. The association was later reorganized and in 1922 renamed the National Football League.

Errors and missed tackles were the downfall of the home side, although the stats actually show that the Stormers missed eight more than the Auckland region. Perhaps a telling stat is the linebreaks, with the Stormers making 13 to the 7 of the Blues.
Coach Pat Lam seemed to direct his attention towards the officials though, claiming that the Burger try shouldn’t have been given. “Some calls out there made it very tough for us,” he said.
“When the touch judge says it’s short, and Alby (Mathewson) says it’s short, but Keith Brown (referee) believes he saw it over the line. We’re very frustrated.”

“The season has not gone,” he insisted. “The Six Nations is so tight these days that anyone can win it and we know that.
“It has been a good start for the likes of England, Ireland and France but we are not out of it.
“There are a lot of tough games coming up and, if I know the guys, then we are going to fight to the end.
“It is a poor start but I am sure we can pick ourselves up and start performing better than we did against England.
“We can win the remaining games and it is not an impossible task. We have been there and done it, so let us have a look to see if we can do it again.
“There are no panic stations yet and there is a lot more to come from this side.
“The good thing is we know we can play a lot better than that display against England. We didn’t play particularly well yet could have won the game.
“Apart from the interception at the end, I felt we were starting to become the better side and we could have taken it in the end.”
Williams struggled to make an impact at Twickenham with very few passes coming his way as Wales struggled for any fluidity apart from a classic display from James Hook.
Wales kicked away possession in the first half and only started to play some creative rugby when they were chasing the game. But the Ospreys wing blamed the 18 turnovers for his side struggling to deliver a free-flowing performance.
“As a Welsh side we try to get the ball around the park as much as we can, to tire the other teams,” said Williams.
“We tried doing it in the first half against England; unfortunately we lost the ball in some key areas.
“There was a massive turnover count in the game – that doesn’t suit us, obviously, because we want to keep hold of the ball.
“When we started doing that in the second half we were able to set free some of the quicker guys we have on the wings.”
By then, Wales were chasing the game after conceding 17 points in the 10 minutes that under-fire lock Alun Wyn Jones was off the field for the senseless trip on England hooker Dylan Hartley.

“So it’s very difficult. He’s one of the boys, and not one of the players is going to put any blame on Alun.
“We are going to stick by him.”
And Williams denied the players were aggrieved towards Gatland about his very public criticism of one of his players.
“It’s very difficult after the game,” added Williams.
“Everyone’s disappointed with what happened.
“The fact Alun Wyn was sent off didn’t help matters.
“But as a player who is going to play with Alun for a long time hopefully, I’m not going to put too much blame on him.
“He’s more disappointed than anyone with what happened on the field.
“He is very self-critical but I hope it is going to make him bounce back stronger.
“If I know Alun Wyn, it will. Hopefully, none of this speculation will affect him.
“Consistently, he’s been one of the best players in Wales for a while.
“I know there’s a lot of unhappy Welsh people out there, but, trust me, there’s no one more unhappy and gutted than Alun.
“I hope he is playing on Saturday – form-wise he should be.
“He’ll be raring to go and we’ll have another great game out of him.
“Alun Wyn is one of the most committed players in the squad and always gives 100 per cent.
“I want him on the field when we are playing because he is the sort of man you want in the trenches.”
But Williams knows Wales need to show more discipline at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday with ace kicker Chris Paterson in the Scottish ranks.
“We harp on about discipline and how important it is especially at international level,” he added.
“When you have the likes of Jonny Wilkinson and Chris Paterson that can kick penalties from everywhere, discipline is paramount.”

That was the clear message last night from kicking coach Neil Jenkins, as he spoke on behalf of the Welsh management.
When asked whether axing Jones was a possibility, he replied: “No, I don’t think so.
“We’ve all made mistakes and Alun made one on the weekend.
“We’ve had other players in the past who have been sin-binned and we’ve come through it unscathed. On Saturday, we conceded some points.
“But it’s one of those things. We learn from it and we move on.
“Alun is a fantastic rugby player. He made a genuine mistake and we’ve got to accept that, deal with it, move on and make sure our discipline is fine come Saturday.
“We obviously want discipline to be at its utmost. When you play in these games, you want your 15 players on the field at all costs.
“If you don’t, you are going to suffer and concede points and we did on Saturday.
“Alun is hurting as much as anyone. He has just got to learn from it and put it right on Saturday.”
Asked whether there was any danger of Jones taking on the role of a “one-man riot” against the Scots in his eagerness to make up for his indiscretion, Jenkins said: “I don’t think so.
“He’s a good bloke and a great player with a lot of experience under his belt now, so I don’t see that happening at all.”
Reflecting on the defeat to England, former Wales fly-half Jenkins said: “Beforehand we certainly thought we were capable of winning the game.
“To come away with a defeat is obviously hugely disappointing. The Grand Slam has gone, the Triple Crown has gone, but the championship is still alive.
“We need to get back on track quickly, perform well and win on Saturday.
“It’s going to be a very tough game for us. We realise that.”
On the fitness front, there’s mixed news over Lions front-rowers Gethin Jenkins and Rees, who both pulled out of the England game after originally being named in the side.
Wales physio Mark Davies said the prospects for Blues loosehead Jenkins, who has had a calf problem, were encouraging.
“Gethin is doing well,” he said.
“We are progressing his training this week, with a view to him taking a full part in Thursday’s session.
“We always thought it was a bit tight for last weekend and he just fell a bit short.
“But at this moment in time he is looking good.”
The picture is bleaker for Scarlets hooker Rees, who is still struggling with the groin injury he suffered against Australia in November.
He’s out of the equation for the Scotland game and a decision will be taken soon on whether he needs an operation which would consign him to a lengthy layoff.
“Matthew has a recurrent groin injury, which he sustained at the end of the autumn series,” said Davies.
“He was left with two options at that time – either to have it surgically repaired, which would have meant he missed the Six Nations, or to go down the non-surgical course and rehabilitate to get himself in with a shout for the championship.
“He did that and he was doing ever so well.
“He got 25 minutes in his first game back for the Scarlets on the eight-week mark, which he was told was about the time he could return.
“But then, unfortunately for him, he tweaked it again in the game against Brive and he has been on the sidelines since then.

Within the maul itself the most relevant clauses are that “Players joining a maul must have their heads and shoulders no lower than their hips” (17.2 (a)); they “must endeavour to stay on their feet” (17.2 (d)); and “A player must not intentionally collapse a maul” (17.2 (e)). Thus there remains considerable latitude for creativity.
One very marked difference between the two contests is that in the scrum either pack, whether having the feed or not, has the opportunity to establish dominance and drive the other pack back. By contrast it is very rare in the maul for the side not in possession to gain significant ground. This is largely due to the fact that the team with the ball is able to surreptitiously transfer the ball laterally from hand to hand so that the push from their opponents bypasses the ball-carrier, allowing him to be driven forward more or less unimpeded.
I believe that players can be trained to maul much more effectively and the secret is body height. In a typical situation where a maul forms the ball carrier stands upright, making no attempt to crouch.
