England power past Ireland at Twickenham

England finished second in the Six Nations championship following a powerful performance against Ireland at Twickenham. The English forwards dominated up front, resulting in a 30-9 victory against the Irish, on St Patrick’s Day.
The home side were awarded a penalty try by referee Nigel Owens after the Irish pack disintegrated under the persistant pressure. A similar situation occured later in the game, resulting in just a penalty, but a quick tap from Ben Youngs. Owen Farrell kept up his good form by kicking six penalties and a conversion.
Ireland coach Declan Kidney blamed the loss on their scrum weaknesses. “I wasn’t surprised by what happened at the scrum because Mike Ross got a crick on his neck at the first scrum and managed to play for half an hour after that,” he said.
“Tom Court came on and went valiantly, but our balance was off. That was always on the cards because we have guys who don’t have huge tighthead experience playing for Ireland at the moment. It’s something we’ll have to work on and bring more Irish guys through.”
Interim England coach Stuart Lancaster, who took over from Martin Johnson following the Rugby World Cup, looks to have secured his position as being in charge fulltime. His assistant, Graham Rowntree, has backed him fully, as have many of the players.
“We’re reborn as a new team under Stuart. It’s hard to think about the World Cup because it’s such a long time ago. We’re still not the finished article and there’s loads more to come. I’ve never worked with such an energetic group of young players who just want to do well,” he said.
It’s since been reported that Nick Mallett is still the frontrunner for the job though, with his international experience and credentials outweighing that of Lancaster’s. The RFU have said they won’t be swayed by public sentiment, and will reportedly interview both candidates this week.
England defeat France in Paris in Six Nations classic

England beat France away from home for the first time since 2008 as they came away 24-22 winners in a classic Six Nations encounter in Paris on Sunday afternoon. A last minute dropgoal attempt from Francois Trinh-Duc fell short for the hosts.
In one of the more entertaining Six Nations games we’ve seen in recent times, Le Crunch turned out to be a classic battle that went right down to the wire as France fought back after England took an early lead. Two quickfire tries, first a great effort from Manu Tuilagi, then a Ben Foden try set up by Ben Morgan, gave England a 14-3 lead in the first half.
France chipped away and the second half was a far tighter affair. A fantastic try from Tom Croft then appeared to seal the deal for the English, but thanks to Julien Dupuy, Lionel Beauxis, and Morgan Parra, who all contributed points from the tee, and a Wesley Fofana try with 6 minutes left, we saw a thrilling finale to the game.
If Trinh-Duc’s dropgoal attempt had just a meter more on it, it would have been the French celebrating, but instead England took a famous win in Paris, and still have a mathematical chance of winning the Six Nations.
“It’s hard to come back against the English after such a bad start. We clawed back into contention thanks to our pride,” said brilliant French number eight, Imanol Harinordoquy.
“The two turnovers did for us. Once again we came back into it and we didn’t miss out by much. It’s hard to beat the English once they get ahead,” he added.

The big hits, try savers, and collisions from England vs Wales

England and Wales’ Six Nations encounter at Twickenham on Saturday was one of the more intense games of the weekend. With the Triple Crown at stake, and of course bragging rights, neither side gave an inch. Here’s a look at some of the rough stuff.
The biggest hit of the game was probably winger George North’s tackle on new England flyhalf Owen Farrell. It was an awesome sequence, as young Farrell showed he can produce bits of magic out of nowhere, before North said hang on, we can’t have that, and flattened him.
It was included in the highlights of the match so that’s why you haven’t seen it on here sooner. Rather than feature it on it’s own, it makes sense to show all the good stuff together, including a few big charges from another young beast, England center Manu Tuilagi.
Tuilagi, alongside tackling machine Brad Barritt, gave them good go-forward ball as he bumped defenders out of the way and actually came close to scoring on one occasion, had it not been for an incredible tackle from Welsh captain Sam Warburton.
That’s in the video too, as well as a few other collisions, charges, and tackles, including Leigh Halfpenny’s excellent trysaver on David Strettle at the end. While it didn’t look technically perfect, he put his body on the line, coming off worse for wear but saving the day for his side.

Wales claim the Triple Crown with nail biting win over England

Wales can now aim for the Grand Slam after picking up the Triple Crown when beating England 19-12 in an intense Six Nations game at Twickenham yesterday. The match went down to the final play, when David Strettle was held up over the line.Â
Leigh Halfpenny made a courageous tackle on Strettle as England looked to get into a position from which they would kick to draw the game. Halfpenny put his body on the line, seemingly knocking himself out in the process, before Jon Davies and George North held up the Saracens winger.
Strettle has since insisted that he felt the ball touch the ground, despite television match official Iain Ramage having numerous looks at the incident and finding the footage inconclusive.
“I felt the ball touch the floor,” said Strettle. “If it is inconclusive you have to go with the attacking team. When they showed it on the big screen it looked like it went down as well,” he added, before saying that he felt the touch judge was in the best position to adjudicate on the decision.
“The strange thing for me was that I was hoping the touch judge might have seen it because our physio was standing right next to him and he says it was grounded. I can’t understand why we have not gone back for that penalty,” he added, referring to the advantage played by ref Steve Walsh.
A few minutes earlier Welsh replacement center Scott Williams ripped the ball from England lock Courtney Lawes and sped away for what turned out to be the decisive try.
“We knew it would be the toughest game, and it was tough. We are over the moon to get the Triple Crown here,” said captain Sam Warburton, who led from the front as always.
Wales face Italy next, then a meeting with France which could be their Grand Slam decider.
In your opinion, was the decision at the end correct?

England edge past Italy in the snow of Rome

England got out of jail in Rome thanks to another charge down from Charlie Hodgson, and some consistent kicking from young Owen Farrell. They’ve got a few big players returning to the squad though, so that should bolster their efforts.
Manu Tuilagi, Toby Flood, and Courtney Lawes have all rejoined the training camp following injury, and will no doubt be in contention for their meeting with Wales in two week’s time.
Flood will be looking to push Hodgson out of the starting flyhalf spot, but with two crucial charge-down tries, it’ll be fairly harsh to drop him. Hodgson’s try against Italy brought England back into the game after two quick tries at the end of a sterile first half put the home side in command.
Farrell then showed his temperament to slot the conversion and two penalties, allowing England to take their second win of the competition.
“Owen is beginning to fulfil the promise Heâs stepped up magnificently. His ability to tick that scoreboard over was important. We trust in him and his team-mates around him clearly do too,” said coach Stuart Lancaster.
When asked about the conditions and the atmosphere, Farrell brushed off any need for concern.
“Itâs more off-putting when theyâre silent,” said Farrell.
Below are the three tries from the game if you haven’t seen them yet. We’ll have clips from the rest of the weekend’s action, from all competitions, soon. If you have a request from something you saw and would like featured, please drop us an email, tweet, or post a request
Scotland fail to capitalise on chances as England take Calcutta Cup

Eight points from debutant Owen Farrell and a Charlie Hodgson try proved to be the difference as England saw off a sloppy Scotland side 13-6 at Murrayfield this weekend. England were under the pump in the second half but escaped with the win.
In what was Englandâs first win in the Scottish capital since 2004, the visitors managed to keep an aggressive Scottish attack at bay, although were massively assisted by the abundance of errors from the home side.
The Scottish dominated the territory and possession stats but aimless kicking, repeat infringements and too many basic errors meant they were unable to convert their chances into points; as typified by clear blown scoring chances from Ross Rennie and Greig Laidlaw.
Meanwhile England captain Chris Robshaw led from the front for âthe auld enemyâ, putting his body on the line as Scotland threw everything but the kitchen sink at the red rose defence.
But the men in blue were unable to convert their chances into points and gifted England the perfect start to their 2012 Six Nations campaign.
Interim England coach Stuart Lancaster was pleased with his sideâs strong defence and strict discipline: “[Murrayfield] is a tough place to come and win, so that was a great result,” he said.
“We got a lot of things right, especially in defence where we showed great spirit and willingness to work. We always had an inner confidence in those new players and we’re delighted to get off the mark but it’s only step one.”
Meanwhile, Scotland coach Andy Robinson stated that his sideâs failure to convert chances into points cost them the win: “We created enough chances, but weâre not taking them,” Robinson said.
“It’s important that we stay together. Everybody is very frustrated by the loss.”
