Australia beat Samoa in classic final to win the Tokyo Sevens

Australia beat Samoa 28-26 in a dramatic Tokyo Sevens final earlier today, coming from behind to score a last minute try then slot a touchline conversion. It’s their first tournament win of the current HSBC Sevens World Series.
Wearing lime green, Australia made their way through the tournament playing some inspired rugby, culminating in their impressive win over Samoa in the Cup Final.
“We’ve really come a long way, it’s not easy to win a cup final. They showed a lot of tenacity, courage and commitment against Samoa. It was an extraordinary final and I’m really proud of them,” said Australia coach Michael O’Connor.
Captain Ed Jenkins scored the decisive try at 26-21 to Samoa, giving Matt Lucas the unenviable task of having to slot the dropkicked conversion to win the game. As you can see in the highlights below, his never didn’t falter and Australia won the game on the final whistle.
“It’s a pretty young squad and we had an idea today that we should never give up until the final whistle, and we never gave up,” said skipper Jenkins.
New Zealand, who were beaten 17-12 by Samoa in the semi final, stretched their lead at the top of the overall standings. They now lead Fiji by six points on 128, Fiji are at 122, and South Africa are third with 105. Australia are up to six place now, with 84 points.
The next round, and penultimate of the series, is in Scotland May 5-6.

Rugby World Cup Winners – Australia 1991

A month ago we brought you a fantastic documentary charting the success of the All Blacks at the 1987 Rugby World Cup. Today, on the eve of the 2011 Quarter Finals, we take a look at the Wallabies’ campaign of 1991.
With superstar wing David Campese in the form of his life, Australia did what they couldn’t do four years earlier and made it to the final. Campo scored six tries and set up many others, including the famous miracle pass to Tim Horan against New Zealand in the semi final.
The Man of the Tournament was in good company, as young John Eales was immense, particularly in the final, and Nick Far Jones, Tim Horan, and Michael Lynagh all played large roles in the first of Australia’s two Rugby World Cup titles.
The tournament was jointly hosted by five countries, with France hosting the most matches, but the opening match and final were played at Twickenham in England.
The tournament actually has the unenviable stat of having the lowest average points per match of any other world cup. While in 1987 the average was 50.7, in 1991 it was 37.4, and since then it hasn’t dropped below 50 again.
The final of the stayed true to the low scoring stats as Australia continued their fine defensive record and came away 12-6 winners. They conceded just three tries in the tournament.
The following documentary has brilliant footage from all the biggest matches, and includes excellent insight from the players themselves, making it a must watch for all rugby fans. Enjoy.

Tiger Woods Claims Australian Masters Win at Kingston Heath Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia
Tiger Woods Claims Australian Masters Win at Kingston Heath Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia
Victoria’s hefty investment in Tiger Woods has returned a healthy dividend in the form of the 2009 JBWere Australian Masters title, the 0,000 first prize and the champion’s yellow jacket, all safely secured by the world No.1 at Kingston Heath on Sunday.
Woods, the joint leader after 54 holes with Australians Greg Chalmers and James Nitties, fired a final-round 68 at the historic 6455-metre, par-72 layout in Melbourne’s renowned sandbelt to prevail at 14-under by two shots from Chalmers (70) in outright second.
Francois Delamontagne of France elevated himself from amongst the also-rans with weekend rounds of 68 and 69 for a share of third place on 10-under with Jason Dufner (70) of the USA, while Nitties (73) rounded out the top five at minus-nine.
“It was a great day today,” a satisfied Woods told his media conference.
“All the guys have raved about this golf course and I understand why.”
“I enjoy all the sandbelt courses, really, because it brings back shot-making, something that we don’t see enough of in the States.”
Clad in his customary Sunday red, Woods constructed a copybook birdie at the first to signal that Saturday’s misadventures, when he carded a frustrating and unsatisfactory 72, were well and truly behind him.
In fine, warm conditions, the 14-time major winner made his move with successive birdies at five and six.
First, he offered his huge gallery the thrills they were craving with a seven-iron to the pin for a gimme at the 351-metre par-four fifth for the outright lead, followed by a sand wedge to inches at the next for a tap-in to extend it.
Woods’ most telling shot of the day was at the par-five 12th when he smashed a fairway wood from 268 metres to within four metres of the flag, setting up another birdie for a three-shot break on his rivals, though he later credited a clutch putt for par at nine for helping to maintain his momentum.
But it didn’t all go the champion’s way.
A furious Woods blamed an overenthusiastic photographer for his wayward approach which was to cost him a shot at 13 – his one blemish for the round – and a par at the par-five 14th was an opportunity lost.
“I felt I was in control of the tournament after I made that birdie on 12 and a photographer took the control right away from me,” Woods told his media conference.
“He took a few shots on my downswing, I flinched and made bogey.”
“I don’t mind players taking away the control, but not when something happens from outside.”
It was when he holed a three-metre birdie putt at the 142-metre par-three 15th that Woods effectively slammed the door shut on his rivals.
Critical of the softness of the Kingston Heath greens on Saturday, Woods said they were only marginally better for the final round.
“They were faster today but they still were holding and you could be quite aggressive going to some of these flags,” he said.
“Even downwind the ball wasn’t going to get away from you – you still had a chance to spin the ball which is normally not the case.”
The champion was kept honest by Chalmers who managed a couple of early birdies and remained thereabouts despite a dropped shot at the 173-metre par-three eighth.
What really hurt the 36-year-old, however, was his failure to convert two gilt-edged birdie opportunities when he most needed to on the back nine at 14 and 16.
“Even though I finished second, I’m thrilled he (Woods) was here, I wish he would come every couple of years,” said a gracious Chalmers.
“It’s been a pretty fantastic week with the crowd and the atmosphere we had as golfers, it was like a football crowd brought to the golf.”
“That was special, very exciting and it made you play better – it certainly did for me, anyway.”
Woods’ victory was warmly welcomed by Victorian premier John Brumby whose state government attracted criticism in some quarters for agreeing to underwrite Woods’ million appearance fee which was double the total prize money for the tournament.
The size of the final day crowd – 25,132 – was a useful barometer of the tournament’s outstanding success on almost every level.
Adam Bland’s 67 was the best of Sunday’s rounds while two former Masters champions, Craig Spence, the 1999 winner and Aaron Baddeley (2007) both matched Woods’ 68.
Defending titleholder Rod Pampling fired a final-round 73 to finish equal-14th at minus-four overall.

All Blacks retain the Bledisloe Cup with convincing win over Australia
There was a special feeling at Eden Park as the All Blacks defeated the Wallabies 30-14 in front of an expectant Auckland crowd, retaining the Bledisloe Cup and putting themselves in a great position to take the 2011 Tri Nations title.
Yesterday there were a number on internationals taking place, with some sides looking more impressive than others. In fact, perhaps the All Blacks (of the New Zealand variety) were the only side that looked like anything worthy of taking the big title in a few months time. They’re yards ahead of the opposition at this stage.
But, that is what these warm up games, and the Tri Nations, are all about.
The Wallabies were outplayed, and despite scoring a brilliant try through Digby Ioane, and a consolation…

Danny Cipriani Says He Gets No Sympathy In Uk To Is Off To Australia
Danny Cipriani Says He Gets No Sympathy In Uk To Is Off To Australia
Depressed Danny: I get no sympathy here.. that’s why I’m off to Australia
Cipriani kicked a hat-trick of penalties at Adams Park where long-time leaders Saracens were denied a single scoring chance.
He then left the field applauding those who had made the effort to see one of his last performances in English rugby.
After the game the talk was of a gifted young English player who has “no limitations to play unbelievably at fly-half”.
But even then the man being hailed by Saracens boss Brendan Venter was not Cipriani, but his full-back Alex Goode.
It was all rather sad, particularly viewed against the backdrop of Cipriani’s admission the “negativity” towards him plunged him into depression as he was overlooked by Martin Johnson.
“There has been so much negativity surrounding me, from coaches, pundits, all sorts of others. It’s been depressing. I’ve never made any secret of the fact I want to have a career with England. I could have improved so much by now if I’d been given the chance. The best way to get away from all the negativity is to go to Melbourne.”
For Cipriani not to acknowledge any fault on his own part in this sorry saga is both revealing and highly relevant.
Unquestionably he is a talent but he has been his own worst enemy. What a pity that more of those close to him chose not to point that out.
“My rugby has made me depressed and I have to get back to feeling good about myself and back to being called confident, not arrogant,” he said. When I came through as an 18-year-old I could never have dreamt I’d feel so down about my rugby as I have been lately.”
The governing body’s director of elite rugby, Rob Andrew, conceded yesterday that no such agreement exists, but insisted England had received assurances from the player’s advisers that his contract covered all training sessions and rest periods between Tests. However, his contract does not contain such detail.
Stade owner Max Guazzini is incensed by the rigid stance of England and the RFU, given that his club have an injury crisis and have released their player whenever they have been asked to do so. They have issued a written warning to Haskell for missing training, brought in independent legal advisers to verify his absence and have made threats about re-negotiating his contract.
Haskell spoke to Stade yesterday and is aware of the scale of their anger. But the RFU are determined to avoid this becoming a test case which opens the way for French clubs to either withdraw players or demand compensation for allowing them to fulfil England duties.
Haskell has been told that if he goes back to play for Stade, he will be banished from the squad and may struggle to fight his way back. As one source put it: ‘They’re going to hang him out to dry and if it means he’s the sacrificial lamb, then so be it.’
Cipriani put his disillusionment to one side yesterday to kick Wasps back into the Premiership’s top four against long-time leaders Saracens.
The visitors crashed to their third defeat in four league games and left Venter cursing their lack of intensity in a first-half dominated by a rejuvenated Wasps pack.
Cipriani put them ahead with a penalty in the second minute and added a second eight minutes later. Before half-time he had the chance to bury Saracens yet missed two chances. But he sealed the deal soon after the break.

In Australia, skilled visa issues often take much of the limelight. But of course, there are still many things to talk about the land down under other than that. And you will likely find them even more interesting than talking about visas and passports.
Australia skilled visa
One of these popular topics of discussion is sports. In fact, sports are very much a part of an Australian’s way of life, much like kangaroos and barbecue (well not really that much, but you do get the drift). And if you are a foreigner on your first time in the country, a useful tip that you can keep in mind if you want to start a conversation with the locals: talk about sports first and you will likely get their attention.
As a sports loving nation, there are are many kinds of events that people here love. One of the most popular is perhaps cricket. In fact, cricket is often considered as the country’s national sport, as it enjoys a significant level of participation in the country. For those not familiar with the game, cricket is somewhat similar to baseball or softball, though played on a somewhat slower pace.
Despite that, the game still draws huge attention from spectators in the country. More than 20,000 people regularly attend matches held in various parts of the country. And the Australian national cricket team are by no means strangers in the international scene. In fact, the team is actually one of the most dominant groups in the international cricket circuit, winning several major titles.
Australia skilled visa
On the other hand, if you are looking for something a bit faster, then rugby football would probably be the right one for you. Both variations of the sport, rugby league and rugby union, enjoy equal popularity among fans (the main difference between the two are the number players). Rugby is akin to the sport of American football, minus the body gear. The game lists more than 80,000 players around the country. Just like cricket, Australia is also a dominant force in the international scene. And in here, country’s friendly rivalry with New Zealand is one of the most anticipated events.
Because of the country’s love for sports, it is not surprising that Australia is actually one of the most dominant teams in the quadrennial Olympic Games. In fact, in the last four Games held (with the country hosting the 2000 Sydney Olympics), Australia consistently placed in the top ten countries. Many notable Australian sports personalities have also since went on to play for various leagues worldwide.

Prediction: The Wallabies may be reeling from back-to-back defeats but they still boast too much class for an Italian side that has plenty of forward grunt but lacks the backline flair to pose a real threat.
Trivia: Wallabies playmaker Cooper will have fond memories of playing Italy, having scored his first Test try on debut against the Azzurri in 2008.

End of Year Internationals
Italy – Player to Watch: Italy boss Nick Mallett has handed a surprise debut to 20-year-old scrum-half Edoardo Gori, who will be hoping his pack have one of their better days at the office to ensure he has time to think.
Italy – Team News: Debutant Gori starts in tandem with Brive fly-half Luciano Orquera following an injury to Australian-born playmaker Craig Gower while Alberto Sgarbi is called into the midfield. Hooker Fabio Ongaro also replaces Leonardo Ghiraldini, Andrea Lo Cicero is in at loose-head for Salvatore Perugini and flanker Paul Derbyshire is named in the back-row ahead of Roberto Barbieri.
Australia – Player to Watch: Fly-half Quade Cooper was singled out for criticism in the wake of the loss to England and was uncharacteristically quiet at Twickenham. Expect him to explode back into life in Florence.
Australia – Team News: Matt Giteau and Benn Robinson have been axed with midweek skipper Berrick Barnes drafted in at No.12 and promising Reds prop James Slipper taking over Robinson’s loose-head berth. Brumbies lock Mark Chisholm drops out of the starting XV in favour of Reds youngster Rob Simmons, who is set to make his full debut. Scrum-half Will Genia also misses out due to a rib injury, meaning that Luke Burgess partners Cooper at halfback. Lachie Turner starts on the wing after James O’Connor returned to Australia to attend a funeral.

Rugby – Australia Facing South Africa in Tri-Nations on Saturday
Rugby – Australia Facing South Africa in Tri-Nations on Saturday
Australia is preparing to face South Africa on Saturday in Perth during the Tri-Nations. After three losses in a row â the latest against New Zealand last weekend â the Wallabies are at the bottom of the standings; the team and its coach, Robbie Dean, are training hard and making a series of roster changes in order to prime themselves for the match. The match will be a decisive one for the Wallabies; the team must win its remaining games for a chance to win the title. A series of injuries have plagued the team and left key players out of the game. In a new move to resolve the problem, Coach Dean has called in six members of the Western Force side in order to solidify his team. Thus, with Wallabies captain Stirling Mortlock out for the rest of the tournament, and Nathan Sharpe and inside center Berrick Barnes both sidelined after injuries in Saturdayâs match against New Zealand, Dean has called for reinforcements. Ryan Cross will be replacing Barnes, although he will start at outside center while Adam Ashley-Cooper will play inside. Mark Chisholm, who has recovered from a dislocated wrist, will replace Sharpe at lock. Not all the injured players, however, need be replaced. It was announced this week that James OâConnor and Rocky Elsom had passed their fitness tests and would rejoin the Australian team. OâConnor was named to start at fullback after overcoming a leg injury, while Elsom was cleared to start at blindside flanker after recovering from an ankle problem. The coach also made two additional changes unrelated to injury: Peter Hynes is on the wing while Ben Alexander will replace Al Baxter as tighthead. Despite the changes, the Wallabies remain confident in their players and in their teamâs depth; they still hope for a positive outcome this Saturday. South Africa has previously proven that it is stronger than the Australian team; in a match earlier this month in Cape Town, South Africa defeated the Wallabies 29-17 due to a very effective kicking game. As a result, Australia has focused a large part of its training and preparation on kicking. “We’ve been working pretty hard over the last 18 months on our attacking kicking and that includes contestable, putting up high balls, the cross-field kicks to wingers and the little grubbers,” Lachie Turner said. “We’ve been working hard on finding space all over the field and giving ourselves options to find it, and our kickers have been doing it well.â He also pointed out that each team has a weakness; the Wallabies have had enough time to watch South Africa and learn its Achillesâ heel. Although he didnât deign to mention what South Africaâs weakness was, he did say that the Wallabies were prepared for Saturday. In the last few days, all of the teamâs cleared players have proven their fitness. Both the coach and the team itself believe that they are ready to face South Africa this weekend. We hope the best for both teams.

Green invasion might not get what they came, England V Australia rugby
Green invasion might not get what they came, England V Australia rugby
Keeping with previous treks to Australia, amid the Friday night buzz of downtown Brisbane there was a palpable sense of another impending Green Army invasion. The ex-pats have converged like moths to a flame, from all corners of Australia and even Singapore and no doubt beyond.
Tricolours not only bedecked plenty of bars around town but apartments too on roads leading to Suncorp Stadium in Milton to the north of the city. Any Irish person living in “Briz” tells of every floor space being taken up. The Irish are coming. It should all make for a cracking sense of occasion.
Suncorp, home to the Queensland rugby league and lately union sides, has almost sold out to its 52,000 capacity. Yesterday the ground echoed to the Irish kickers familiarising themselves with the steepling stands, which lend weight to Les Kiss’s “lunchbox” description of the stadium.
Ronan O’Gara appeared more animated than Jonathan Sexton, perhaps as the pressure is off him to a degree, but he must be in a strange place. On 99 caps, he is set to become only the third Irish player to reach a century, yet won’t know if today will be the day.
England V Australia Hospitality
You’d hope, for his sake, that he either comes on and kicks the winning penalty or instead leads the side out in one of the November Tests at the Aviva, either of which would be preferable to a five-minute run-on with the game already won.
As with that scenario, the line-ups add to the slightly surreal backdrop. With both sides ravaged by injuries, Australia retain only two of the pack and four of the backs from the sides that met each other last November, while similarly, Ireland retain two of the pack and five of the backs.
One ventures Ireland haven’t encountered such an unproven tight five in yonks, but against that Ireland’s tight five is not at optimum level either. On top of this, Cian Healy was a minor concern yesterday when sitting out the captain’s run with a back strain.
It’s hard to envisage either side having a pronounced edge at scrum time, less so that Gert Smal and his troops will have rectified the evident confusion at lineout time against the All Blacks. Seán Cronin, thrown in at the deep end there, hung in gamily and should also be better for the experience, while this looks, finally, to be Tony Buckley’s breakthrough tour.
But ultimately, how the Irish backrow can impose themselves on Rocky Elsom, David Pocock and Richard Brown, and in the contact/breakdown area especially, probably holds the key. The more influential plays they can come up with, the better Ireland’s chances.
Regarding Jennings, Elsom observed “his effectiveness often gets missed if you’re watching the telecast but when you’re playing with him or playing against him, you realise how much influence he can have on a match.”
England V Australia Hospitality
Brian O’Driscoll, meanwhile, agreed with Kidney that a good start is critical, all the more so after going 10-0 down in 11 minutes against the All Blacks (even before Jamie Heaslip was sent off) and 15-0 down after 13 minutes against the Maoris.
“Starting well and just getting a bit of consistency about our game and giving them respect but not too much respect. Definitely trying to impose our game on them is a must. I think we’ve shown great components of it during the tour, but just in fits and starts. It just has to be an 80-minute job.”
What’s more, Ireland have been exposed to more of a higher tempo, ball-in-hand game with which Australia are further down the road with. By contrast too, Ireland’s counter-attacking game is also under-developed. In light of all this, it would be a phenomenal achievement to register a first win in 24 attempts and 31 years since Ireland last beat a Tri-Nations side in the Southern Hemisphere.
