The All Blacks give South Africa a hiding in Wellington

South Africa suffered their second heavy Tri Nations defeat in as many weeks as they went down 40-7 to a far stronger and more clinical All Blacks side in Wellington on Saturday.

The All Blacks sported their new retro looking jersey, bringing back the famous white collar that’s been missing for over ten years. It’s a throwback to the 1987 Rugby World Cup success, the last time they won the tournament. With the 2011 version starting in a few months time, they’re looking in good shape to replicate that success.

They were far more clinical than against Fiji, with Dan Carter commanding the ship. He missed a few kicks uncharacteristically, but looked back to his best, reinforcing the common perception that he’s the best rugby player on the…

Wallabies bounce back with a strong performance against South Africa

The Wallabies bounced back from the disappointment of a loss to Samoa by picking a far stronger outfit, resulting in a convincing 39-20 Tri Nations opener win over the touring Springboks in Sydney.

The Australians scored five tries as they out-muscled and outstripped the disorganised South African team, who at times showed major flaws on defence, and lack of power up front. David Pocock was influential, while the Reds halfback combination of Quade Cooper and Will Genia did what they’ve been doing all season, as they took their opportunities and played attacking rugby.

“I’m very lucky as a nine that the pack was going forward,” said Genia afterwards, paying tribute to the hard work and great platform set by a physically dominant forward…

South Africa win the Edinburgh Sevens in dramatic fashion

The final leg of the IRB World Series Sevens took place in Edinburgh this past weekend, with New Zealand being crowned champions, and South Africa pulling off an incredible last few seconds win over Australia in the final. Here’s a wrap-up of all the action.

New Zealand took the overall World Series champions title, but failed to produce for the second week in a row. They had already clinched the title last weekend, so despite perhaps wishing to have gone out on a high, they were victorious nonetheless.

Scotland, who were hosting the event, seem to have found their straps and managed to cause quite the upset, beating Fiji 14-12 on day one, as well as thrashing the USA. They lost out narrowly in the Bowl final though, with Kenya scoring late in the game.

Canada beat Russia 17-12 to take the Shield, but ultimately it was all about the Cup final, where South Africa and Australia served up one of the best, and highest scoring, finals of Sevens rugby ever seen.

Having won in London last weekend, South Africa had to launch two comebacks in their final against Australia, firstly from being down 7-28 early in the second half, then from trailing 19-35 with just two minutes on the clock. They scored last gasp tries through Steven Hunt, and then the winning try with time up was scored by flyer Sibusiso Sithole, who was so excited, he almost dived out in the process of scoring. The game ended at 36-35 to South Africa.

“Australia made a good start and we had to give it everything we got,” said coach Paul Treu. “We were severely disrupted by the injuries and apart from the injured players, Frankie also shouldered on bravely despite hurting his knee early on Saturday.

“What can you say after a performance like that? They refused to give in and South Africa can be very proud of these young men,” he added.

South Africa leapfrogged England, who sat on 127 points, to take second place in the overall standings on 140 points, while New Zealand were out of reach at 166 points. Fiji and Samoa came in fourth and fifth places respectively.

Below are three videos in a playlist. The first shows some of the big games, and then includes the final. The second video shows top points (385) and top try (40) scorer Cecil Afrika, and the third shows Seven of the Best tries from the weekend. Enjoy.

South Africa win the London Sevens as NZ are crowned series champions

Record crowds turned out for the penultimate leg of the HSBC IRB Sevens World Series in London, with Twickenham bathed in sunshine for a fantastic weekend of top quality rugby action.

The first day of the event brought in a crowd of 54,357, a record in the 12 year history of the series. Fancy dress, beer, and the occasional streaker were the order of the day.

New Zealand did enough to be crowned outright series champions after hosts England failed to get out of their group, winning just one of their Pool games. New Zealand themselves were disappointing, being knocked out in a heavy defeat by Fiji, but their ninth series win reasserts their overall dominance since the series’ inception.

Fiji impressed throughout, but coming up against South Africa in the final, they blew a 14 point lead as the men in green and gold fought back to outwit the larger opposition, and take a 24-14 win, their first in London since 2005.

Cecil Afrika was as inspirational as ever, and continues to lead the try scoring records for the season. It was the relatively unknown Stephen Hunt though who proved invaluable as he pulled off a brilliant try saving tackle late in the game, then scored the winner.

South Africa are now up to third on the overall standings with one leg to go, the 100th event in World Series history, which takes place in Edinburgh this coming weekend.

The following three videos give you a nice general view of the tournament, including what led up to the final, the final itself, Seven of the Best tries from the tournament, and a video that shows some of the record breaking crowd on day one.

Trading Talk – British and Irish Lions Tour of South Africa

Trading Talk – British and Irish Lions Tour of South Africa

The British and Irish Lions arrived safely in South Africa and have been training at their camp in Sandton all week. Rugby union spread bettors will have noted Ian McGeechan’s first match line-up and will be eagerly anticipating the action. With a long wait before the First Test spread punters will have a chance to form their opinions on the likely outcome of the Test series. The Lions’ preparations have been hindered by a number of injured players and with this in mind the Sporting Index traders have made South Africa outright spread favourites for the series at 9-12 (10pts for series winner, 5pts per Test won).

Perhaps the biggest worry for buyers of the supremacy spread is that history seems to be against them. They will be hoping the Springboks can avenge their two previous series defeats in Africa when the Lions were led by Willie John McBride in 1974 and Martin Johnson in 1997. The Series Correct Score spread markets give spread punters the chance to challenge the traders’ predictions on the outcome of the Test series – a South Africa 2-1 victory is favourite with a spread of 36-39 (25pts if series winner is correct, 50pts bonus if series score is correct).

Sporting Index offer a host of spread markets to keep the summer tour interesting in its entirety including the tour win index spread, at 78-84, where 25pts are awarded per Test win and 10pts for any other win. Sellers might remember the last Lions tour to New Zealand in 2005 where the tourists won seven matches (without winning a single test) for an equivalent make-up of 70pts while spread buyers might take more confidence from the last time the Lions visited South Africa in 1997 – the equivalent make-up then was a hefty 120pts from 11 matches.

Spread bettors will be able to wager on Sporting Index’s Total Points 50-up spread (a prediction on the aggregate total of points over 50 in an individual match), currently at 50-56. It may surprise a few spread punters that during the last Lions tour only four of the eleven matches totalled more than 50 points. However, punters will remember the match versus Manawatu which the visitors won 109-6, or even the 116-10 demolishing of Western Australia four years previously. Buyers of the spread will be salivating at the thought of a repeat in South Africa. The 1997 tour in South Africa saw six matches produce more than 50 points, the largest being a total of 88 against Mpumalanga.

Buyers of the Total Lions Points spread at 280pts should be aware that during the tour to New Zealand the Lions scored 328pts, whilst the last tour in South Africa saw them manage to rack up 361 points. The Lions/Opposition supremacy spread at 90-100pts will attract plenty of attention from <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.sportingindex.com/spread-betting/rugby-union/”>rugby spread bettors</a>, but it should be approached with caution – the overall Lions supremacy in 2005 was 108, but buyers should remember that 103 points of that supremacy were earned in just one match.

What Tactics the British Lions of 2009 Will Imply At British and Irish Lions – Tour to South Africa 2009

What Tactics the British Lions of 2009 Will Imply At British and Irish Lions – Tour to South Africa 2009

The Countdown has already begun, The British Lions and Irish Lions tour to South Africa will happen this summer. Thousands of British Lions fans have already booked their tickets and made reservations to confirm their presence at the event. It will be undoubtedly the biggest and the best event of the year.

The British and Irish Lions is a rugby union team which is made up of players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Initially called as British Isles, the name British Lions came up during their tour to New Zealand and Australia in 1950. Since their jerseys and ties had the emblem of a lion, journalists used it as a nickname. Ever since the tour to Australia in 2001 they have been called as British Lions.

The first tour took place in 1888 when a squad consisting of 21 players from Scotland, England and Wales visited Australia and New Zealand. They won 27 matches against the teams from Victoria and South Australia in the 35-match tour. Three years later after first match tour, the English rugby team was invited to tour in South Africa and today it is a major sporting occasion.

The summer tour of the British Lions is happening after 12 years and the rugby fans worldwide are anticipating an eventful clash between the two giants. Can the British Lions strike the current champs who are also regarded as a stern challenge to the tourists? The British Lions touring squad will be having a well-balanced squad with players from the Six Nations and Guinness Premiership whom will be captained by Ireland’s Paul O’Connell.

The fixtures will be as follows:

30 May – 14.00 hrs  Highveld at Royal Bafokeng, Rustenburg
3 June – 14.00 hrs  Golden Lions at Ellis Park, Johannesburg
6 June – 14.00 hrs  Cheetahs at Vodacom Park, Bloemfontein
10 June – 18.10 hrs Sharks at ABSA Park, Durban
13 June – 14.00 hrs Western Province at Newlands, Cape Town
16 June – 14.00 hrs  Coastal XV at Nelson Mandela Stadium, Port Eliz.
20 June – 14.00 hrs South Africa at ABSA Park, Durban (1st Test)
23 June – 18.10 hrs Emerging Springboks at Newlands, Cape Town
27 June – 14.00  hrs South Africa at Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria (2nd Test)
4 July – 14.00  hrs South Africa at Ellis Park, Johannesburg (3rd Test)

Since rugby is a confrontational sport there have been many unsavoury incidents throughout the past years. However The International Rugby Board will be monitoring the matches through video technology and will carry out necessary penalties for any foul play.
The 2009 British Lions and Irish Lions Tour of South Africa is much awaited with great expectation and is considered to be one of most highly charged and physically demanding contests and the matches will definitely be a thrilling experience for the rugby fans. It will be indeed interesting to see what tactics the British Lions of 2009 will imply at the game while having Ian McGeechan to coach them. It is also food for thought that British Lions won the last series in 1997 in South Africa when Ian McGeechan was their coach.

Eric Doyle sent the important details on British Lions and their Tour to South Africa. Read more information about British Lions prior to the upcoming matches.

Rugby – Australia Facing South Africa in Tri-Nations on Saturday

Rugby – Australia Facing South Africa in Tri-Nations on Saturday

Australia is preparing to face South Africa on Saturday in Perth during the Tri-Nations. After three losses in a row – the latest against New Zealand last weekend – the Wallabies are at the bottom of the standings; the team and its coach, Robbie Dean, are training hard and making a series of roster changes in order to prime themselves for the match. The match will be a decisive one for the Wallabies; the team must win its remaining games for a chance to win the title. A series of injuries have plagued the team and left key players out of the game. In a new move to resolve the problem, Coach Dean has called in six members of the Western Force side in order to solidify his team. Thus, with Wallabies captain Stirling Mortlock out for the rest of the tournament, and Nathan Sharpe and inside center Berrick Barnes both sidelined after injuries in Saturday’s match against New Zealand, Dean has called for reinforcements. Ryan Cross will be replacing Barnes, although he will start at outside center while Adam Ashley-Cooper will play inside. Mark Chisholm, who has recovered from a dislocated wrist, will replace Sharpe at lock. Not all the injured players, however, need be replaced. It was announced this week that James O’Connor and Rocky Elsom had passed their fitness tests and would rejoin the Australian team. O’Connor was named to start at fullback after overcoming a leg injury, while Elsom was cleared to start at blindside flanker after recovering from an ankle problem. The coach also made two additional changes unrelated to injury: Peter Hynes is on the wing while Ben Alexander will replace Al Baxter as tighthead. Despite the changes, the Wallabies remain confident in their players and in their team’s depth; they still hope for a positive outcome this Saturday. South Africa has previously proven that it is stronger than the Australian team; in a match earlier this month in Cape Town, South Africa defeated the Wallabies 29-17 due to a very effective kicking game. As a result, Australia has focused a large part of its training and preparation on kicking. “We’ve been working pretty hard over the last 18 months on our attacking kicking and that includes contestable, putting up high balls, the cross-field kicks to wingers and the little grubbers,” Lachie Turner said. “We’ve been working hard on finding space all over the field and giving ourselves options to find it, and our kickers have been doing it well.” He also pointed out that each team has a weakness; the Wallabies have had enough time to watch South Africa and learn its Achilles’ heel. Although he didn’t deign to mention what South Africa’s weakness was, he did say that the Wallabies were prepared for Saturday. In the last few days, all of the team’s cleared players have proven their fitness. Both the coach and the team itself believe that they are ready to face South Africa this weekend. We hope the best for both teams.
