John Carter’s shiner from Dave Allen Punch – Oxford vs Cambridge 2011

9c598f0a0a5183bc6e3366cbc73d0a0c.jpg

Oxford University captain John Carter led from the front as his team claimed their biggest Varsity match victory over Cambridge since 1988, winning 28-10 at Twickenham last month. After the game all the talk was of that shiner.

The 2011 version of the Varsity match had everything you’d expect from such an encounter. The old school tradition was firmly in place as the touch judges were former captains, including a certain Joe Roff on one side. Then there was the raw physicality that we’ve come to expect, as the passion for the occasion spilt over more than once.

Sebastian Chabal lookalike Carter, a former professional in the Guinness Premiership with Sale and Leicester, got involved in an off the ball scuffle with Australian Dave Allen, the latter having played with Ulster. Shortly after Carter makes a pass and play carries on, you can see the two get in a tangle. As the chip ahead takes place from the Cambridge counter-attack, Allen and Carter can be seen wrestling on the floor.

What followed was a punch from Allen as he pinned down the Oxford skipper. After being stitched up Carter returned with an almighty shiner and battled all the way to the end, leading his side to a well-deserved victory. Man of the Match should have perhaps gone his way for the heroic effort, but it wasn’t to be and excellent lock Karl Outen claimed that honour.

It was Oxford’s second successive win in the Nomura Varsity Match and Carter clearly wasn’t too bothered by the battle scars afterwards, hailing his young side’s performance as he brushed off the incident, then no doubt joined Allen for a few beers later that evening.

Northern Hemisphere XV vs Southern Hemisphere XV – Help for Heroes 2011

fde6d04e389af8e714c335678ebfd3f7.jpg

Twickenham played host to the Help For Heroes game between a Northern Hemisphere XV and their Southern Hemisphere equivalent. Top players, past and present, as well as servicemen, turned out for the cause, raising half a million pounds in the process.

It was a fantastic occasion and while the game was for a charitable cause and had a few players who retired some time ago, there was a great mix as we got to watch world cup winners Will Greenwood, Phil Waugh, and Adam Thomson in action.

The game was treated seriously as both sides got physical and played some incredibly attractive rugby, as can be seen in the highlights with the try scored by Jackson Willison for the South. It was the North who started out on top though with an outstanding effort from young Saracens hooker Scott Spurling.

In the end the Southern Hemisphere side took the honours 36-22 in front of almost 30 000 fans, raising money and awareness for injured soldiers. The money will go to a state of the art recovery centre for the wounded. This was the second such event, with the first taking place in 2008 and between the two they’ve raised over 2 million pounds for the charity.

“I’m humbled really to be involved. To see what people have done to put this structure in place is amazing,” said Fijian Nicky Little, who came on for the Southern side after flyhalf Sias Ebersohn was stretchered off with a knee injury.

“All of them are amazing people really. They go over there and get injured for whatever reason, come home and don’t get much help from the government. But someone has made this charity and it’s mind-blowing,” he added.

RUGBY: SIX-NATIONS 2011 – England vs Italy ruggachick.com RUGBY: SIX-NATIONS 2011 – England vs Italy twitter.com My Match Report: England were out of the blocks from the 1st whistle. Try scoring machine Chris Ashton was the 1st to cross the try-line, and that was just the beginning… He added 3 more tries during the rest of the game, giving the Italians a real beating. A late try from Italy, close to full-time proved something positive of an overall disappointing spell. It seemed to be England's day at Twickenham.

The Alternate Plays of the Rugby World Cup 2011

588d3c2269a065cb9feda3dd98418199.jpg

It’s been a few weeks since the World Cup finished but there’s still a few things to look back on, so today we’ve got some alternate plays of the tournament for you. We also have a bit of an update as to what’s been going on with the site.

You may have noticed that in the past few days there haven’t been any new updates. That’s because we have been upgrading to a new and improved server that promises to be a lot faster, reliable, and cost efficient (that means expensive, but we’re staying positive).

We’ve also got a much anticipated Try Savers and Rib Breakers RWC Edition that is nearly ready to be posted, so that’s exciting news. That’ll be ready in the next couple of weeks hopefully.

The Heineken Cup kicks off shortly too and we’ve got a bucketload of match tickets to give away to RD users, so keep your eyes and ears peeled for that one, as well as a few other giveaways.

As always please keep a lookout for new clips you think can be featured on the site, as there’s lots happening in the Aviva Premiership, Top 14, and RadoDirect Pro 12 at the moment.

Today though this is just a quick look back the 2011 Rugby World Cup, and some of Reunion’s plays of the tournament, which includes best offload, falcon, try, handling skills, and a few others.

The Golden Lions beat the Sharks to win the 2011 Currie Cup

67de47959e2bcc4ee60c523a81b704a6.jpg

The Golden Lions claimed the 2011 Currie Cup after a brilliant performance in the final in Johannesburg on Saturday as they beat the Natal Sharks 42-16 in an entertaining game. It’s their first piece of major silverware since 1999.

Coached by Kiwi John Mitchell, the Lions had a fantastic season as they were fairly unaffected by the World Cup and ended top of the table. The Sharks on the other hand missed a lot of key players in the last two months, but when they all returned for the big game, they didn’t gel.

“The Lions were, without doubt, the best team on the park and worthy winners of the Currie Cup – we just have to take it on the chin,” said Sharks captain Keegan Daniel. ”We’re disappointed we didn’t convert opportunities into points in the first half when we had territory and possession, but you can’t win finals with the ill-discipline we showed.

Getting to a final is one thing, but you need to produce a great game, which we couldn’t do. The Lions were phenomenal,” he added.

It is the Lions’ first home victory in a Currie Cup since 1950, so it was a massive moment for the union that lifted the first ever Super Rugby competition, the Super 10, way back in 1993.

Young flyhalf Elton Jantjies was outstanding on the day, kicking everything asked of him and marshalling his troops expertly. He’s had the experience and know-how of Carlos Spencer to call on, and it showed. While Sharks fullback Pat Lambie seems to be a long term option for the Springboks number ten slot, Jantjies is tipped by many to be an ideal candidate.

On the other side of things veteran Wickus Van Heerden, who captained the side without success a few years back before moving to the Bulls in search of bigger things, said that it was one of the best experiences of his career. “To see a packed Coca-Cola Park is very special. I know where we have come from as a team, and this is unbelievable,” he said. Van Heerden has now won the Vodacom Cup, Currie Cup, Super 14, and the World Cup.

CJ Van Der Linde was yellow carded for a dangerous tackle, which is included below, but that didn’t affect the Lions at all as they scored some great tries while Jantjies kept the scoreboard ticking over. Below are highlights of what was a thoroughly enjoyable game of rugby.

Rugby World Cup 2011 Team of the Tournament

fa5f3edcd522ce777ec8168c4d60ace4.jpg

Rugby World Cup 2011 finished just over a week ago, so since then a few different sectors of the media have been stringing together their respective Teams of the Tournament. Here’s a few to mill over, as well as a surprisingly balanced one from Reunion in New Zealand.

Today we take a look at who impressed the most at the tournament, and how selections vary across the board for a RWC 2011 dream team. We also welcome your selections, as it’s always a hotly debated topic among fans.

The main video here is from the Reunion show in New Zealand. They have a nicely balanced team that quite refreshingly features players from a number of different countries. It would have been tempting for them to shove in a whole load of All Blacks, but as you’ll see, they only have five.

Below are another three teams from three different sources. There’s a few common trends, namely with Lionel Nallet, Jerome Kaino, and Israel Dagg all being picked. There’s also a few positional switches, and allowance for injured players in some cases.

The Guardian
1. Tony Woodcock (New Zealand), 2. Marius Tincu (Romania), 3. Adam Jones (Wales), 4. Brad Thorn (New Zealand), 5. Lionel Nallet (France), 6. Jerome Kaino (New Zealand), 7. David Pocock (Australia), 8. Imanol Harinordoquy (France), 9. Mike Phillips (Wales), 10. Dan Carter (New Zealand), 11. George North (Wales), 12. Jamie Roberts (Wales), 13. Conrad Smith (New Zealand), 14. Vincent Clerc (France), 15. Israel Dagg (New Zealand)

New Zealand Herald
1. Cian Healey (Ireland) 2. Stephen Moore (Australia) 3.Owen Franks (New Zealand) 4. Lionel Nallet (France) 5. Victor Matfield (South Africa) 6. Jerome Kaino (New Zealand) 7. Sean O’Brien (Ireland) 8. Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe (Argentina) 9. Dimitri Yachvilli (France) 10. Rhys Priestland (Wales) 11 George North (Wales) 12 Ma’a Nonu (New Zealand) 13. Brian O’Driscoll (Ireland) 14. James O’Connor (Australia) 15. Israel Dagg (New Zealand)

ITV
1. Jean-Baptiste Poux (France) 2. Keven Mealamu (New Zealand) 3. Adam Jones (Wales) 4. Brad Thorn (New Zealand) 5. Lionel Nallet (France) 6. Jerome Kaino (New Zealand) 7. Sam Warburton (Wales) 8. Imanol Harinorduquy (France) 9. Mike Phillips (Wales) 10. Rhys Priestland (Wales) 11. James O’Connor (Australia) 12. Ma’a Nonu (New Zealand) 13. Jamie Roberts (Wales) 14. Vincent Clerc (France) 15. Israel Dagg (New Zealand)

Have a look through these, as well as the Reunion selection, and let us know what you think.

Radike Samo’s IRPA Try of the Year 2011, vs New Zealand

627bce1eee05f1627642ee6b6f905e02.jpg

The IRPA Try of the Year award went to the Wallabies’ Radike Samo at the IRB Awards earlier in the week. He scored the try against the All Blacks in the Tri Nations and we featured it in the highlights then, but not on it’s own, so here’s another look at it.

It’s good to archive stuff like this, a fantastic try from a player who has been around the block. Samo has had a good run of form of late, and even turned out on the wing in the RWC. His hard running, big tackling, and good work ethic have prolonged his career to the point of him now being a Super Rugby and Tri Nations title holder.

This 60m solo effort against the All Blacks has now been recognised as the Try of the Year by the International Rugby Players Association.

“I was lucky I got there. It was good. I just ran the gap and it went from there. I didn’t realise it was 40 or 50m… the last 10m was like… argghh,” said 35 year old Samo.

“It’s a pretty awesome try for me because its my first test try. Something I’ll never forget, it’ll be there for the rest of my life so its all good,” he added.

Acura Niuqila, who played for Fiji, said that the try was typically Fijian, and shows exactly where the term ‘Flying Fijians’ comes from. ”We Fijian players are like wine… the older we get, the better we become. I’m sure there is still much more left in Samo. He is in his mature age now. Thirties is the mature age for Fijian players. They are in their best form at this age,” Niuqila said.

This is the game – A breakdown of the 2011 Rugby World Cup

81bc1f403cef14478e6225c2587100fc.jpg

Will Carling, Zinzan Brooke, Rob Henderson, Scott Quinnell, and Matt Burke are back for the final episode of TITG to discuss the final of the Rugby World Cup, and which other moments stood out for them. It was an interesting discussion, with all the usual banter.

Depending on which side of the fence you sit, this RWC was either thoroughly enjoyable, or fairly disappointing. Taking your teams performance out of the equation, what were the stand out moments for you? The guys on the panel go through theirs.

The topic of France naturally came up, as nobody ever expected them to make the final based on their form, but once there, they were just a few points away from upsetting New Zealand yet again and becoming World Champions. Tonga beating them proved to be a favourite moment for many though.

Zinzan Brooke, champion in 1987, explains how things have changed since then and that there were no victory parades or organised events. They also went to work on the Monday morning, unlike the class of 2011, who are still out partying as they’ve had a week of taking the cup around the country.

Matt Burke also recounts a hilarious story about Stephen Larkham, who so famously got his team into the final in 1999 – also against France – by beating the Springboks for a shock 40m dropgoal. There’s a few other great stories and comments too. It’s an enjoyable breakdown of the RWC.

All Blacks win the 2011 Rugby World Cup – France challenge the Haka

bce1ab9075f62db4f2efb5d46f6427d6.jpg

The All Blacks put their 24 year nightmare behind them as they beat France 8-7 in the lowest scoring Rugby World Cup final ever. France came to play, and made their intentions clear just before kick off as they challenged the Haka in a unique way.

Wearing their white away strip, France linked arms and formed a ‘flying V’ before marching forwards towards the All Blacks, making it clear they weren’t going to simply make up the numbers in this one, their third RWC final.

“I wasn’t alone, I had my teammates with me. I felt them close to me — too close at one stage, because they wanted to go across the field and hug New Zealand,” captain Thierry Dusautoir said.

“It was necessary to calm them down. But it’s a great moment we’ll all remember. I felt during the week that the players wanted to do something during the haka, like they did in 2007. Someone came to see us, who I won’t name, who told us this idea. We thought of it this morning.”

Prop Fabien Barcella was one of the Frenchman who continued forward, having to be held back at times. “It was a ‘V’ for victory, quite simply. It’s the chance of a lifetime to play a final at Eden Park, we didn’t want to miss out on it,” Barcella said.

“It came from the heart, and showed that the 30 of us were together tonight.”

Francois Trinh-Duc, the flyhalf who started off the bench, said that the players needed to make an impression on their opponent. “We had to throw down the challenge to them,” Trinh-Duc said.

“It’s a special moment for the All Blacks, so we wanted a special moment for ourselves as well. It was a way of defying them, letting them know we were there. I think they were surprised, they weren’t expecting it, so I think it worked,” he said.

What did you think of what France did in response to the Haka?

Highlights from the match can be viewed on the official RWC website. Other clips and coverage will continue on RD over the next few days. Please get in touch if there’s anything you’d like featured.

A quick comparison between the Hakas of 1973 and 2011

The All Black Haka, love it or hate it, it’s been around for a long time and isn’t going anywhere. But was it always so confrontational? Looking back, it would appear not, and this is where some find issue with it.

When it comes to watching New Zealand play, the Haka is one of the things I look forward to most. It’s a brilliant piece of showmanship that should be embraced. About thirty years back, things were slightly different though, and this is what annoys some rugby fans.

The usual response to criticism is that they’re still allowed to do it because they’ve always been allowed to do it. That’s a fair comment, but there is no doubt though that in recent times it’s changed drastically, and become a far more intense, physically…

The Official ball of Rugby World Cup 2011

With the Rugby World Cup only a few months away, now is as good a time as any to take a closer look at the ball that will be used. Once again, Gilbert are the official suppliers, and have created a great looking ball.

You can expect two things to dominate the World Cup – defence, and kicking. As we’ve seen in past tournaments, if you master those two key elements, you’re likely to go a long way.

With that in mind, Gilbert have put special emphasis on creating a ball that will provide goal and line kickers with improved accuracy. Out of hand, it will also have an impact as it has new rubber compounds that will have an influence on it’s flight. It’s been thoroughly tested, with former Test flyhalfs Paul Grayson and Braam van Straaten both…

The Rugby Club Plays of the Season for Super Rugby 2011

Australian rugby was on a massive high following the Queensland Reds success in Super Rugby, and despite that coming to a crashing halt this weekend with the Wallabies loss to Samoa, there was plenty to enjoy throughout the season.

The Rugby Club is of course an Australian show, so there’s always a slight Aussie bias, but that doesn’t mean that there wasn’t a whole lot to enjoy for Kiwi and South African fans, as throughout the season all sides contributed to a fascinating tournament.

The best tries, biggest hits, and craziest moments were nicely spread across the three nations, although when it comes to celebrations, there was one side who stole the show. Yep, the Reds.

When Digby Ioane did his break dancing routine and Quade Cooper…

Pacific Nations Cup 2011 wrap-up – Japan victorious

Last week the Pacific Nations Cup came to an exciting conclusion as Japan scored an injury time try against Fiji to secure their first ever title win. Here’s a quick wrap-up of what happened in the last two games.

Japan needed to beat Fiji with a bonus point to make sure they had a chance of winning the tournament, and things weren’t looking good at halftime as Fiji led the game. The home side had a lapse in discipline though and ended the match with 12 players on the field, allowing Japan to score a late try and pick up a 24-13 bonus point win.

Fiji had three yellow cards and two reds, and have since had two players suspended.

“It was Fiji’s indiscipline that helped us in the win,” said Japan coach John Kirwan. “However, I salute my…
